In state. 30 minutes from Ann Arbor. Have toured campus twice (one time was on one area of the campus, other was in a different area). Currently a junior entering second semester
Rank: School doesn’t rank
Weighted GPA of 3.5. Yes, I know. This is what will break me if I don’t get in. I had personal issues come into effect sophomore year. However, there is a HUGE upward trend from soph --> Juni year. Freshmen year was good too.
ACT: 33 my first time (Honestly, i’m going for a 36)
SAT: Have not taken yet
EC’s: Four in which I am heavily involved in. I didn’t do a large amount of E.C’s because I wanted to dedicate myself to the ones i’m currently in
Recs: I know three teachers who could write great rec letters and coincidentally attended UMich (this is not the reason I chose them…LOL)
Essays: I am a great writer. Essays will definitely be my strong suit.
Sports: None, because of personal reasons which I will get into on my application when I apply.
Any chance? I want to go to UMich so bad. It’s my dream school. I think i’m pretty much guaranteed a spot at MI State, but it’s just not where I want to go
Thanks in advance.
Your ACT is fine. You should raise your GPA if possible. You can explain the personal issue, and provided that have been having a recent upward trend, it will be looked at positively.
You don’t need a ton of ECs. You just need to be able to talk about them. Having four or five activities that you can really discuss meaningfully is better than having 20 or 30 where you can’t say much about the majority of them. How do you know if you can talk about them? You should be able to write a meaningful paragraph to describe them. For example, “I accomplished this and that on my mission trip” is meaningful, “I showed up to the club meetings every other week for free pizza” is not. There should be roughly two which you should be able to talk about in depth. That is, you should be able to write at least half a page single spaced for each of those activities to discuss how they have helped to shape you.
@umcoe16 Thank you. About my GPA, I don’t think I will be able to raise it much. Most I think can get it to is a 3.6-3.65. I also will definitely be able to write a ton about at least three of the four EC’s i’m involved in.
Also, the only reason I am going to retake the ACT is because I want to prove that I am strongly motivated. A 33 is very good, but a 35 or even 36 (especially with a bit of a low GPA) definitely would look better.
You are instate, so if you can get that GPA to a 3.6-3.65 and your ACT as high as possible, you should be alright.
What is your intended major?
UMich considers GPA and course rigor as “very important” although you don’t really need to overload with AP classes. If you current wGPA is 3.5, it would be tough to bring your uwGPA to the admission range in 1 or 2 semester. Try your best and see how it turns out.
@billcsho My intended major would be either political science or computer science. Not decided yet.
Your best bet is to apply to LSA. In LSA it is fairly common for people to double major, so you would be able to major in both of those.
Applicants to LSA typically have slightly lower (but not by much) stats than applicants to engineering.
