I applied as a transfer student for the upcoming winter term (2010) and checked wolverine access tonight, only to find out "a decision will be arriving in the mail". Does this mean I have been rejected? I had a 3.5 GPA from PSU and wrote great essays so I don't understand why I wouldn't be admitted.

I’m not sure in the case of transfer where that leaves you statistically, but I do know of many students who have attempted to transfer unsuccessfully so I would not expect a 3.5 to seal the deal unless accompanied by outstanding recommendations, accomplishments, course rigor and school reputation. In the case of one student I know, he was successful after two years of trying, and found the material significantly more challenging that his former school, where he’d had stellar marks.

Thats odd, usually you will get a acceptance or deferrel as ER. Though since your a transfer it may differ ( oh yeah, doesn’t sound like a acceptance).

I highly doubt that it is a deferral letter given that the OP applied for Winter 2010.

So you’re saying I was most likely rejected?

I think it could be either a rejection or an acceptance, given that they gave out rejections online last year. At this point there is nothing to do but wait and hope for the best. But I don’t think it is a rejection by default just because it’s being sent in the mail.

Are you sure applicants were notified of rejection via email? Every time I have researched this it says that a rejection is sent in the mail.

I know that UMich used to send out rejections via WA, but they might have changed that policy (I know from 3 years ago bc one of my sister’s friends was rejected via WA). But the policy could have changed.

Rejections are actually usually sent by mail. But so are deferrals. SC is it possible your sister’s friend only “found out” about her rejection because WA said “decision sent by mail?” I haven’t heard of anyone actually receiving a rejection on WA.

What is the likelihood of ever getting in after being deferred?

I was recently deferred and calculated things myself. Considering last year acceptance rate was about 50%, likelyhood of getting in after a deferrel is probably around 20%… odds are against you ( and me).

@ kmccrindle: That could definitely be possible. My sister had the impression that she found out online, but your scenario sounds perfectly plausible.

thanks a million

Balder, I know a student who attempted to transfer soph year with stellar marks. He wasn’t accepted. But he kept in touch with admissions and tried again junior year and was successful. Just so you know – persistence can pay off : ) So don’t worry about what’s statistically possible – instead worry about what possibility you can create!
