Hi- I was wondering how US scientists view the University of Michigan as an institution for biomedical science research. If you do your PhD there, is it looked upon as much lower and worse than... Harvard or MIT or Stanford? How much worse? Do you think it is good enough if you want to do academic route afterward? Also I don't know other schools who are comparable to the Uni of Michigan in this field- can you suggest some? I think this is because I do not know the scientific climate of the US very well. This is for biomedical science or biology.

Also, if anyone can help me with examples of what are known as the best schools (reputation) and those who are not the best but pretty good... that would be good also. I find it difficult to try to see this through my limited view of publications and websites... much better to hear it from US scientists who know the climate.

Thank you very much!! this forum has been very helpful so far.

Other people will probably post here and tell you that it's the research you're passionate about that matters, not the prestige of the school. Ultimately, that's true. You really need to look into each program (and some schools offer multiple programs) to see if it's something you would like and if there are many people there with whom you'd love to do research for 5-6 years.

Try asking more specific questions - like the environment / feel of a particular program, or how graduate students are treated there and what kind of jobs they often get afterwards - and maybe others can help more

Thanks! I will be asking specific questions to the graduate students there. I was more interested in the perception of the school as a whole.

Does anyone else have any perspective about what kind of "tier" the University of Michigan is in as far as biomedical sciences? Specifically, if I want to go into academia or industry afterward, is it seen as a top-tier program, or significantly lower than Harvard Stanford etc., by employers who are also in the science field?
