University of Michigan Chances

I’m currently a high school senior and I won’t apply to U of M until this fall, after I’ve already graduated high school because an Early College program that I’m in requires me to stay in my town for another year attending the community college, so I graduate with an Associate’s degree only one year after high school, all under full scholarship. Despite having an associate’s degree, I will still apply to U of M as a freshman, and I’m not really sure if that helps or hurts my chances. Anyways, now I’ll talk about my resumé.

My high school GPA is 3.81, so I will be graduating summa cum laude. I’ve taken honors classes all through high school and started taking college classes (not AP, through Early College) my sophomore year. My college GPA is 3.7 but that is still raising each semester as my grades are only improving. My ACT is a 30 although I plan on taking it again this June. I played football all four years of high school, two years on varsity. I have volunteered at a local Special Olympics for the past two years and I plan on continuing doing that, and I volunteer at a Spirit Day camp in the summer, which is for people with intellectual and developmental disabilities. Through the community college I’m enrolled in, I am a Student Ambassador and I am a member of Cirlce K, along with Phi Theta Kappa, which is the community college honors society. I attended a three day leadership camp at CMU, which I learned a lot through. This year, I joined DECA for the first time. I placed first in the state for my event at the states competition and I believe that I have a really good shot at placing at internationals at the end of this month, possibly even first. I’ve held the same job since my freshman year, and I’ve worked full time during the summer and part time during the school year since I got the job. I don’t have a minority advantage and I’m not really sure about what advantage or disadvantage my location and family’s income gives me.

So what are my chances of getting accepted by the University of Michigan this fall? It’s been my dream and my goal my whole life to go there, so what else can I do to improve my chances between now and when I apply?

Your test score and GPA are below admission average right now. You should actually apply as a transfer student instead of freshmen. Then your high school GPA and test score would bare much less weight.

I spoke to Michigan reps and they’ve told me that I have to apply as a freshman, that’s how they treat early college students

Even with an Associate Degree? That doesn’t make sense.
Anyway, your test score is around the 25th percentile of admitted freshmen. Is that GPA w or uw? Are you in-state or OOS?

I know it’s strange how they treat this, but early college programs are fairly new so that’s how it is right now. Plus some of my credits won’t transfer. And my gpa’s are unweighted, and I’m in state. I’m signed up to take the act again and if I commit to studying hard again I think I can improve it at least 1 or 2 points.

uwGPA 3.81 and from in state help your chance a lot. If that was wGPA and you are from OOS, the chance would be much much lower. If you can bring up your test score a little bit, it would help too. You are currently not too far off from the in state admission average. What is your intended major?

Actuarial science

That would be in the LSA so you are within the range. In state students have a ~50% admission rate and you are not too far off from the average of in state applicants. So your chance should be just shy of 50% right now. Note that the UMich admission average ACT is 32.

Guessing the admssion rep didn’t understand your situation. Maybe the staff at NCMC if that’s your school can help you get a different answer. It’s just too strange to think that UM would treat someone with an associates degree as a freshman. Even if some of the classes won’t transfer.

Just curious, how did you know I go to NCMC? & I’ve talked talked to Michigan reps numerous times and I visited U of M today and asked again because I want to make sure, and that is for sure how they are treating it. I don’t understand it either, it just doesn’t make much sense, but it’s showing no signs of changing by the time I apply this fall
