University of Michigan - College of Engineering Acceptance (help please)

I'm in the final stage of applying to colleges and the college I really want to attend University of Michigan. I'm interested in Mechanical engineering and I have been very apprehensive about whether or not I will make it in to the College of Engineering. I have a 3.94 and a 28 on my ACT. Good extra-curricular activities and I am involved in student council and NHS as well as plenty of other sports, etc. Based on what you see here what do you think my chances are?

Act looks a little low for umich. I would forsure still apply- not completely out of your reach. I hope your science and math grades are great… The essays will have to be great as well if you want a real shot at it…

My son is a freshman at the U of M College of Engineering, one month under his belt (whew). I do think your ACT is a bit low for the CoE - do you have time to retake it in the near future? Also, is your GPA weighted or unweighted? I believe they are more interested in your unweighted GPA. Also, what about AP classes? They will want to see that you took rigorous classes in high school. Finally, are you in-state or out-of-state?

Even if your GPA is unweighted, I believe your ACT score is too low and your chances are slim at best. Are you a Michigan resident? If not, it is a very pricey public for OOS residents.

My GPA is unweighted. I have taken physics and chemistry in previous years. This year my rigorous classes are Honors Chemistry, English 101, AP Literature and Composition, and AP Statistics. Unfortunately, my school dropped calculus for this year and I have no way of taking it. I know they strongly recommended taking the class and that scares me.
One more question. Would be out of the question to attend another college for a year, achieving good grades, then transferring to UMich?

What is the breakdown of your ACT? If your math and science reasoning are super-high and the others much lower, that may make a slight difference. If you have 28s across all subjects, then you are in muddier waters.

29 in math, 31 in science, 26 in english and 28 in reading.

I was talking to a representative from UMich who came to our school less than a week ago, and for engineering he said that they look at the math ACT section and want to see at least a 28 on it. I would say your ACT is not too low to ruin your chances.

I think the fact that your school does NOT offer calculus actually HELPS you a little bit because your math score would have likely been higher had you been able to take calculus in school. Being in-state helps you as well, if you are a resident and you didn’t confirm one way or the other yet. Overall, I 'd definitely advise a backup plan since you are still battling uphill odds…

Do you mean your school does not offer AP Calc? If not, all you can do is take the most rigorous math available to you. Still don’t know - are you in-state for U of M or out-of-state? Your chances will be better if you’re from Michigan, but I think it would be wise to retake the ACT, if at all possible.

My school isn’t offering any sort of Calculus. I’m In-state so thats good. If I were to retake the ACT that score wouldnt apply for the common application early action period. Does anyone know if I’m allowed submit what I have now for the early action period then retake the ACT and submit my application again for regular admission? Am I better off just waiting for regular admission?

Last year, many kids who applied regular decision did not get an answer until very late. The wait was agonizing, as you can probably imagine. It was the first year UMich accepted the common application and they seriously underestimated the increase in applicants. Chaos ensued. Have they taken the necessary steps to make sure a repeat of last year doesn’t happen again? You might want to do some investigative work and see if they hired more admissions officers for the onslaught of applications they are about to receive. You might call or email the school but I would not take just anyone’s word as gospel on their answer. This might be a good time to ask your guidance counselor to email the head of admissions.

I do not believe you can move to the RD round if you are rejected EA, only if you are deferred. I’d definitely take MichMom’s advice and retake the ACT. Ask your guidance counselor if you should apply EA or RD, based on retaking the ACT and hopefully raising your current score. Good luck!
