University of Michigan Deferral Thread EA 2019

Accepted here too :).

@CupertinoRaider‌ there is no link for deferrals on wolverine access. One only appears with accepted or rejected decisions.

@ONEQQQ‌ : I’m an international kid who was accepted after deferral yesterday. And to those people who haven’t sent that letter of interest- do that ASAP. You’ve to send it to your regional counselor.

@96blue Thanks, that’s a relief. Suddenly wondered if we had missed this and should contact the admissions office to check.

My daughter is currently an OOS freshman in LSA at Mich and went through much of the same experience as many of those here, last year. She applied EA and was initially deferred (FYI she was told she got the “bad” deferral letter). Almost all the studenst who got in from her HS were legacy, with one or two exceptions. Of course at first she was crushed. She sent her mid-year grades, a follow-up letter of continued interest letting admissions know Mich was her first choice & would attend if accepted, and had her guidance counselor follow-up with a call to reiterate her unwavering interest in Mich and to hopefully have her application reviewed once again early in the admissions process.

Last year admissions started releasing decisions the last week in January (this year it seems its a week later) and then released them in waves in 2 week intervals on Fridays. In late Feb she learned from postings on CC that another round had gone out and logged in to WA to learn she was accepted. An email arrived an hour later. In total, she was 1 of 5 students admitted after the initial December notifications, bringing the total admits from her school to 16. In total, 9 enrolled.

At this point in the admissions cycle, my feeling is there’s still time to connect with admissions and make an impact, if this is truly where you see yourself next September. Reading all these posts has us reliving the stress, struggles and torturous anticipation of what you’re all going through. Good luck to all and wishing you happiness at whatever school is lucky enough to get you.

Also be aware there is no rhyme or reason as to how they release decisions. Sometimes it was by region, sometimes by school (CofE, LSA, Stamps, etc) and decisions roll out throughout the day.

Can letters of interest be sent by email or do they have to be sent via snail mail?

@thawardask‌ they should be sent by email to your admissions counselor.

My SD sent it by email to admission rep assigned to our region. OOS deferred > accepted.

I got accepted on Friday after being deferred. I believe my guidance counselor had sent in my mid-year grades earlier that week. Hang in there, guys!

@1203southview @DAIMYO did not send a letter of interest because I could not genuinely say that I would attend if I were accepted. I have yet to hear back from about thirteen other colleges (applied to fifteen altogether) and Michigan did not offer the best financial aid. Turns out now that I’d overestimated the aid I’d get, and I’d have to pay full tuition to attend, so I can’t even afford Michigan, so that’s off my list  ah well, at least I got accepted. When I was deferred, I was convinced that I’d never even stand a chance at the other places I applied.

@ONEQQQ I got accepted to the University of Michigan on Friday, and I was considered an international student by them. However, I was able to fill out FAFSA (because I have a social security number). My case is a little strange, because I live here and have lived here for years, and I applied for a green card so I was able to get a social security, but I don’t have my green card yet so earlier Michigan told me that I was considered international but it’s possible they changed their minds after realizing that I could fill out FAFSA with a social security number, which most typical internationals can’t do. If they considered me domestic after that, hope other colleges do the same because domestic vs international really makes a difference. Good luck! US college admissions are really a struggle as an international student!

@spacelover17‌ how do you already know how much financial aid umich would give you???

@Sando97‌ I don’t know for sure, but I estimated using Collegeboard’s Net Price Calculator: https://npc.collegeboard.org/student/app/umich

I was deferred EA and have yet to hear back on my decision but under the financial aid section I’ve got links that say “View Financial Aid Document Status” and “Accept/Decline Financial Aid” ect. Wondering if this is a good sign that these links are there or if everyone has them?

my stats are pretty low for the university! In state, 27 ACT and a 3.7 unweighted GPA. I’m involved in tons of extracurriculars though, and I love the school. My brother goes there now & also walks for the hospital. I sent a letter of continued interest and have been in contact with my regional counselor, but I doubt I’ll get it. Small school and we only send 1 or 2 every year. just upsetting because I would really LOVE to go there, and be proud to go there. Just hoping to hear a decision soon! How about you?

@shmosby congrats on your acceptance! from california, as well. was wondering if you think decisions may come every week?

I read every other Friday but I can’t remember where I found that info and whether it’s legit.

My school guidance counselor said they send out acceptances in clusters from now until late April, and then everything after that is a rejection.

I heard someone at my school say that the next wave will be released tomorrow around 3:30. Has anybody else hear something like this?
