University of Michigan Deferral Thread EA 2019

I could not be more devastated.

Actually my grade was at its apex this semester (1/24 ranked) so that I would just send this in and to see what I can do with it. I also hope this decisions would be released like rolling admissions. I cannot wait until April. Too long

2 questions that I would really appreciate if someone can answer: first, how would I be able to show my interest in UMich and the fact that I’m committed? Is there someone I can email and what should I say in that email? Second question (technically third), if I didn’t put some of my ECs on my app or if I became part of new ones after submitting the app, should I email them to admissions?? Thank you in advance, help would be much appreciated!!

Hey you guys I know that U of M is our top choice school therefore we can not give up! We should send letters of interest and strive to improve our chances!!! Do not let this bring you down you will get into U of M!

@happy1998‌ how do we send letters of interest tho?? And what should we say???

What percent of OOS students are accepted early?

Surprised me that there are actually “good” and “bad” deferral letters…

I do not know if it is absolutely right but it seems like there are certain implications. Of couse, even if you get the good note or not it does not guarantee you get in. However, if you have strong will to show them how you want to get in with strong academic record (which they strongly encourages you all to send) then there might be good chance.

Do not give up. This is a particularly hard year because UM accepted then yielded too many kids the past few years. They couldn’t even house all of the freshman this year. “The University’s Office of Admissions will consider placing more early applicants on the wait list and offer comparatively fewer early admissions. ‘We’re going to set a target that is well below actual and we’re going to make very intentional use of the wait list,” she said.’” Now you need to do everything academic in your power to get off that wait list. Notifying them of a few more ECs is NOT the way to do this, unless you are about to cure Ebola or something incredible. Get your grades up as far as possible, well over 4.0. Sadly, it’s not enough. And when your counselor sends new grades, make sure s/he lets them know definitively than UM is your top choice. I promise you, will end up where you’re supposed to be.

Could any benefit come out of registering and taking the next ACT (February 7th) then sending the scores to UMich? I only got a 30 on the ACT, so that may have been something that was holding me back. This was my top school by far. I’m desperate to try something…

I wouldn’t get the score till the end of February though…

Got deferred with the “good” letter but my twin brother got accepted with the same stats…

I’m wondering the same thing, would you guys suggest taking the February ACT or is it too late??

Didn’t the deferral letters kind of tell us not to send in letters of interest? “Beyond that we are confidant yadadada”

Seems like UMich rejected many of the highly-qualified / high-stat candidates (OOS) and accepted many lower-stat ones. Doesn’t make much sense but I sense they’re doing it to maximize yield rate, since many qualified applicants will choose other schools and may have been accepted to ED programs and not withdrawn their UMich application.

Doesn’t seem like a great strategy to attract top talent to the school because I’m sure many deferred applicants (that will be accepted RD) are frustrated and will not attend as a result.

No clue what the case is and that theory may be completely wrong. Just a thought.

They have seen everything up to and including notarized sworn commitments of enrollment-if-accepted, only to see applicants change their minds.

They don’t have ED, which is the only truly dependable vehicle to assess applicant intent. They base yield expectations/predictions on mountains of data from previous years, not letters of interest.

Winter of senior year is too late to start professing love. It’s really unfortunate as most kids only really start to develop deep interest as they mature and go through the process in senior year (well outside of CC where snowflake X "has been dreaming of MIT/Harvard since the 1st grade… puke).

Best course of action is to do great in school and send 1st semester grades (your counselor can advocate for you here with your intent, which is better than anything you might say). If you happen to score a perfect on the AMC12 or some equivalent, by all means send it in. But most local level accomplishments will be received with an eye roll; they don’t want to be bombarded.

It sucks being neither under-qualified and accepted nor over-qualified and deferred. Middle of the pack deferred is the worst :(

I was deffered from the college of engineering.
OOS.
GPA UW 3.9 w4.14
ACT 29
AP’s United States history(4) psychology(5) English literarure(3) Chemistry(5) biology(?) Physics C mechanics(?) Calculus AB(?) English compisition(?)
A lot of extra curriculars/sports and a job.

My friend who is male was deffered from CoE with a 34 ACT and a high GPA, even more rigorous Corse load than me. And another from LSA with a 31 and similar classes to my engineering friend.

Deferred:

SAT: 2270 (800M, 800W, 670CR)
GPA: 3.91 UW
9 IB Courses
EC: Internship at Microsoft Research (paid), started 2 nonprofit ventures, DECA International Finalist/President of top 10 internationally ranked chapter)

Hoping for RD!

I got deferred.

4.8 W 3.97 UW
34 ACT
2200 SAT
750 SAT Math II
Above Average ECs, probably pretty decent recs

This deferral came in as a huge surprise. I’m honestly in shock. I probably won’t get into NYU either now.

Does it help that, even though I am an international applicant, a lot of students from my high school apply and go to UMIchigan? Just last year, from the 30 people that went abroad to study, about 5 went to UMich, and that trend is likely to continue this year. I got deferred from the CoE, with a 2100 SAT and a 4.16 W gpa. What are my chances of getting in?
