University of Michigan Deferral Thread EA 2019

International Applicant: Indian Immigrant

SAT Score: 2330 (800 M, 800 W, 730 CR)

SAT II Score: 2380 (800 Math, 800 Chem, 780 Phy)

Grades: All A+ from grade 9-11. Mid-Sem grades in 12th also all A+. (About 2% drop in marks from grade 11th to 12th, still, overall grades are A+)

Predicted Grades for grade 12: Very very high (Almost 100)

Class Rank: NA. But my teacher told she has mentioned that I am in the top 1% in my school.

Recomm: Computer Teacher’s LOR should be excellent. Counsellor’s would be very good.

Essays: I think my CommonApp Essay was the Achilles Heel. Supplemental essays were 7.5/10

ECs: All 10 sections of CommonApp are stuffed. National and International Level wins (since my country is quite small, national wins won’t matter much).

Leadership: President Student Council in my school.

I applied to the Residential College, how much more competitive is it? And if they didn’t accept me to the Residential College, could they have still accepted me early into the University, or would they just decide all that at once in April?

International Applicant: Indian Immigrant (but living in the States since I was 3, and mentioned in the Common App “Other” section that I applied for a green card, haven’t been rejected, and fall under the category of “eligible noncitizen” for federal financial aid. Idk if they read all that though.

SAT Score: 2400

SAT II Score: 800 Math, 800 Chem

AP Tests/Scores: AP Calc BC (5), AP Biology (5), AP US History (5), AP Chemistry (5), AP US Government (5), AP English Language and Composition (5), AP Ststistics (5, and I independently studied for this)

Advanced classes: I took the AP classes above, along with Multivariable Calculus and Differential Equations in my junior year, which is somewhat unique because at my school these are senior year courses, and I got to take them as a junior because I took Algebra II online in 8th grade. This year, I’m taking AP French, AP Physics 2 (my school has no AP Physics C), AP English Literature, AP Computer Science, and AP Economics, along with Linear Algebra my first semester (I don’t have a math class second semester, unless you count Comp Sci).

Grades: All A from grade 9-11, so 4.0 unweighted, 4.431 weighted. (Mid-Sem grades in 12th also all A but they won’t have seen that yet. However, in their deferral letter, which I know is general, they said senior grades might help? Are they not happy with my grades?)

Predicted Grades for grade 12: Overall A

Class Rank: NA. Our school only does quintiles, and I’m in the first quintile.

Recomm: Government Teacher’s LOR should be excellent, since he was really enthusiastic about writing it. Counsellor’s and physics teacher’s should be good as well, though I’m not entirely sure about my physics teacher since when I later read his recommendation letter for a summer program last year, he talked enthusiastically about my academics but was a little iffy on social maturity. But hey, maybe this one was better? Idk if rec letters have to mention student flaws.

Essays: I had them read over by an essay consultant at our school, and she helped a little with grammar and style and polishing, but she liled them in the end. I was actually really proud of my common app essay.

ECs: All 10 sections of CommonApp are stuffed. I was struggling to cut down the list. Science Olympiad since fifth grade (and have placed at many regional tournaments), started an Astronomy Club, participated in a summer nuclear physics camp, conducted original research for which I’ve won regional awards, done Model UN for four years and won awards at the school conferences and attended a few Ivy League conferences, did Future Problem Solvers since fifth grade, Music for Society (community service music camp), volunteered at a science camp over the summer for 140 hours, am in National Honor Society, and played violin since second grade, and played in the orchestra till freshman year but continued private lessons.

Leadership: Founder of Astronomy Club, Public Relations Officer for Science Olympiad, Vice President for Music for Society. I forgot to mention I also helped start the Astronomy Olympiad in the United States.

I just don’t know what more I could’ve done. (Okay, yeah, I tried AMC and sucked, couldn’t do the Chemistry Olympiad or the Astronomy Olympiad because of foreign citizenship and no green card, and didn’t even dream of independently studying for the physics olympiad because I wasn’t taking AP Physics until senior year and didn’t dream that they, unlike Chem Olympiad, didn’t care about green card or citizenship until the training camp). All of my friends who applied got in, and several of my other classmates.

Also, I have a question - should I have called the admissions up and told them personally that I applied for a green card and haven’t been rejected yet? I had to do that for OSU before they waived my Bank Statement and other internarional only forms, but I don’t think Michigan had stuff like that? And would it matter? I hoped they’d read my explanation in the Common App, since I mentioned I was applying for need-based aid.

It’s comforting to see though that lots of really qualified applicants were rejected! I feel better, especially since some people from my school with stats as good as or lower than mind got accepted.

@spacelover17‌ I’m sure you’ll get in later. It may be that they are trying to figure out how to deal with your particular case. Call up the admissions office to confirm if there are any issues with your application because of your status. Have you been accepted anywhere else?

@anxious00‌ Thanks. I got accepted to OSU, and I only applied to three colleges early. I got deferred from the third, which I expecting. And now I got deferred from the University of Michigan :frowning:

Sorry to talk about the letters again, but if there really is no difference then why do they bother sending 2 versions?

Also, I’m looking for advice regarding me sending my 7th semester grades. I got the first letter where it says they “may” help you. My grades weren’t the best this semester. They will likely lower my UW GPA, but will raise my weighted GPA. How much will this hurt me if I send them?

@bamboo17 Admissions has some reason. We are not privy to it, and the existing theories about what the differences mean cannot be proven on the data we have.

If you don’t send grades, it can be taken as an indication that you are not committed to the school.

If they ask for grades, and you wish to be considered for admission, send them.

I would agree with that statement ^^ the University is looking for reasons not to admit…they have tens of thousands of applications, why give them a reason to deny. As a parent I would say if your grades are sagging senior year you probably aren’t ready for the rigor of UofM either academically or emotionally. It gets more academically difficult each year not easier and what you need to do academically to get in is just the first of many hurdles. UofM is asking for your grades to see if you are sustaining academic growth and drive - a basic requirement for success in any college.

Hey guys, these are my first semester grades:

AP Calculus AB A+
AP Physics C - Mechanics: A
AP Psychology: A
Honors Accounting: A
College Prep Writing: A

Do you guys think my standing can be improved in the deferral pool with these grades?

Also, I sent an interest letter to my territory counselor last night.

@carlsandburgsr‌ Yeah these are really good grades. If these classes are as rigorous or more rigorous than the rest of your schedule, then they should be helpful.

I’m getting 5 B’s and 2 A’s… I don’t think if it’s a good idea to send. But they are all AP’s or honors.

@dreamchaser711‌ Well, if you got deferred, they’ll likely want to see senior grades, because they probably won’t admit you without them. So your grades can’t hurt you, and since they’re challenging courses, they might help you.

My Stats:

Essays: Common App 5/10 -ehh Michigan Essays 8/10

What do you think my chances are of being admitted after deferral

New to the thread. I got deferred and got the “Thank you for your application …” letter with “Strong fall semester or trimester grades may improve your status in the deferred pool of applicants.”

My semester grades are better than last year’s and shows improvement. I’m also taking 5 APs and 2 Honours with 5 As and 2 Bs. But, my semester grades won’t be finalized until Jan. How would I show admissions my first semester grades? Could I send in Quarter One grades? I’ve been reading the FAQ and can’t find an answer. Thank you.

@sj9999‌ I think the mid year report is due by February. So it’s all good.

@spacelover17‌ Oh. It’s through the mid year report. That makes sense. Thank you so much.

Is there any way to see the reason for why I was deferred? I saw that they fill out a information sheet… I’m so sad about being deferred, I know my stats aren’t perfect. But everything else on my app is gold, is that cocky? Literally all of my friends have been accepted who applied. My parents say I should be happy, but how can I, this comparison of my grades to others has defined me for so long. I just thought I was over it, but now this deferral brings all of this self-doubt and sadness back…

@germanbella‌ Girl I know exactly how you feel, though my application is not defined as “golden”, I have always struggled with comparing myself to others and especially my friends who always seemed to excel more than me. The comparison became so bad that I developed depression and it escalated from there. But when I got over it everything became so much better, now my friends applaud my bravery that I always lacked because of my insecurity. Don’t let the fact that you got deferred change your perspective on yourself. I am pretty sure that you will get accepted through RD. Please stay positive.

Does anyone know if we need to put anything more than our name on our letter of interest to our regional counselor? Should I include my UMID?

Also, when do you think the best time to send the email would be?

@germanbella‌ I totally understand you. So many at my school were accepted over me with lower stats merely because of connections they have and legacy. It’s all politics and I think it is so dirty that UMich will choose people with UMich in their family, over the people who have been working all 4 years to be accepted. I do not know of one person who was deferred who has legacy from my school. It’s a very dirty game and it’s heartbreaking for those of us who have had this goal to be accepted for a very long time.
