I applied to the Residential College, how much more competitive is it? And if they didn’t accept me to the Residential College, could they have still accepted me early into the University, or would they just decide all that at once in April?

International Applicant: Indian Immigrant (but living in the States since I was 3, and mentioned in the Common App “Other” section that I applied for a green card, haven’t been rejected, and fall under the category of “eligible noncitizen” for federal financial aid. Idk if they read all that though.

SAT Score: 2400

SAT II Score: 800 Math, 800 Chem

AP Tests/Scores: AP Calc BC (5), AP Biology (5), AP US History (5), AP Chemistry (5), AP US Government (5), AP English Language and Composition (5), AP Ststistics (5, and I independently studied for this)

Advanced classes: I took the AP classes above, along with Multivariable Calculus and Differential Equations in my junior year, which is somewhat unique because at my school these are senior year courses, and I got to take them as a junior because I took Algebra II online in 8th grade. This year, I’m taking AP French, AP Physics 2 (my school has no AP Physics C), AP English Literature, AP Computer Science, and AP Economics, along with Linear Algebra my first semester (I don’t have a math class second semester, unless you count Comp Sci).

Grades: All A from grade 9-11, so 4.0 unweighted, 4.431 weighted. (Mid-Sem grades in 12th also all A but they won’t have seen that yet. However, in their deferral letter, which I know is general, they said senior grades might help? Are they not happy with my grades?)

Predicted Grades for grade 12: Overall A

Class Rank: NA. Our school only does quintiles, and I’m in the first quintile.

Recomm: Government Teacher’s LOR should be excellent, since he was really enthusiastic about writing it. Counsellor’s and physics teacher’s should be good as well, though I’m not entirely sure about my physics teacher since when I later read his recommendation letter for a summer program last year, he talked enthusiastically about my academics but was a little iffy on social maturity. But hey, maybe this one was better? Idk if rec letters have to mention student flaws.

Essays: I had them read over by an essay consultant at our school, and she helped a little with grammar and style and polishing, but she liled them in the end. I was actually really proud of my common app essay.

ECs: All 10 sections of CommonApp are stuffed. I was struggling to cut down the list. Science Olympiad since fifth grade (and have placed at many regional tournaments), started an Astronomy Club, participated in a summer nuclear physics camp, conducted original research for which I’ve won regional awards, done Model UN for four years and won awards at the school conferences and attended a few Ivy League conferences, did Future Problem Solvers since fifth grade, Music for Society (community service music camp), volunteered at a science camp over the summer for 140 hours, am in National Honor Society, and played violin since second grade, and played in the orchestra till freshman year but continued private lessons.

Leadership: Founder of Astronomy Club, Public Relations Officer for Science Olympiad, Vice President for Music for Society. I forgot to mention I also helped start the Astronomy Olympiad in the United States.

I just don’t know what more I could’ve done. (Okay, yeah, I tried AMC and sucked, couldn’t do the Chemistry Olympiad or the Astronomy Olympiad because of foreign citizenship and no green card, and didn’t even dream of independently studying for the physics olympiad because I wasn’t taking AP Physics until senior year and didn’t dream that they, unlike Chem Olympiad, didn’t care about green card or citizenship until the training camp). All of my friends who applied got in, and several of my other classmates.

Also, I have a question - should I have called the admissions up and told them personally that I applied for a green card and haven’t been rejected yet? I had to do that for OSU before they waived my Bank Statement and other internarional only forms, but I don’t think Michigan had stuff like that? And would it matter? I hoped they’d read my explanation in the Common App, since I mentioned I was applying for need-based aid.

It’s comforting to see though that lots of really qualified applicants were rejected! I feel better, especially since some people from my school with stats as good as or lower than mind got accepted.
