@fdolakstart, Hey how did you know that I was sending a deferral letter??? Anyway, I didn’t really know that the letter of “burning desire” was a thing. When I got my deferral letter, I just sent an email to my UM state counselor that night. Again, I didn’t know about the letter thing until I read through forums on CC and reading the UM tumblr page after sending that email. That being said, if you or anyone else want to see my email that I sent, just message me. I’ll be glad to share it with you.

Now, after reading through several forums, I noticed that people are reluctant to send a letter to their UM territory counselor, fearing that they will come off as “desperate” and that the letter specifically tells them to only send their senior year semester 1 grades. I say don’t be afraid of coming off as too desperate. If this “yield protection” thing is true, then it would be extremely important to notify UM that it is your number one school. Personally, I am going to send another email the beginning of January and another at the end of January if I don’t hear back. I think being rejected for appearing “too desperate” is ridiculous. That would be counterintuitive if UM is trying to protect its yield.

I did not even expect to get in, I was surprised I even got deferred.

The territory counselor is one of the three people that review your application. They cover a certain area of your state. They also work in the Office of Admissions.

That is much better than the one I received.

Dear Future Community College Attendee:

We have briefly glanced at your application to the University of Michigan College of Literature, Science, and the Arts for Fall 2015. Given our surging egos and new $8 million dollar a year football coach, admission to the University is becoming increasingly competitive and expensive. As a result, your application has been deferred for a final decision until a later date. Probably 2065.

Your application will be “re-evaluated”, laughed at, and a final decision will be made based on how your credentials and academic achievements pale in comparison to the quality of this year’s freshman applicant pool. All final admissions decisions of admit, deny, defer again, triple defer, or waitlist will be made no later than early-April, 2022.

Please refer to the website www.admissions.umich.edu/deferred/ for FAQs about the anxiety process and what to do next. Strong fall semester or second trimester grades may enhance your status in the deferred pool of applicants. Also, bribes may be necessary in your case. Therefore, please ask your high school counselor to forward your fall semester or second trimester grades when they become available and be sure to include a large bag of unmarked bills with material. Beyond that, short of a zombie apocalypse where all other applicants are killed, we are confident that the information you have given us is more than sufficient to deny you. But we really enjoy making you wait. The most successful candidates send us only what we require. And bigger bags of money.

We hope your interest in Michigan continues, but prefer you get accepted somewhere else; you have our best wishes for an enjoyable and stressful senior year.

Sincerely,

Theodore L. Spencer
Associate Vice Provost and Executive Director

I did explain. they shape the class. As they go, as they start to see who accepts, they realize who belongs. They cannot answer with a specific hard date ( thus the term- it’s a secret to even us), because it is a process. If they knew exactly who was going to be in right this minute? Then everyone would be admitted immediately. But that is not how this process works. Answering a question based in the past has zero to do with this year. That’s why it was answered the way it was.

It’s not obnoxious. It’s an honest answer, with a gif to lighten the mood. I apologize for assuming you were disappointed, and for not following all of your posts to know you are a parent. I admit, I do not read everyone’s posts front to back in every thread. The tone of your posts lent me a different impression than what you are. My mistake.

What exactly did you mention in your letter to the territory counselor? If you don’t mind mentioning, it would be greatly appreciated. I am confused about what I should say to them.

you find your territory counselor from their admissions website, and all I basically said is that Michigan is my #1 school and that I would send my grades asap.

When deferred last year, my daughter’s letter to her counselor read, very simply, " if admitted to Michigan, I will attend".

She sent it at the beginning of the new year, and was admitted at the end of January. And paid her deposit about 90 minutes after getting accepted. LOL

Deferred from the School of Kinesiology. (movement science major)

This thread is not active. Well here is my question
Can someone post two letters that we have recieved for deferral?
It seems clear that two letters are different. I just want to make it clear

Is it safe to assume if one is deferred that the Honors college is out of the question now? I’m confused because so many deferred had good stats, and I really hoped to be admitted to the Honors…
