I’m in Maryland and got an email yesterday that is identical to the one posted in its entirety above. Nothing personal, language identical. I got the “don’t send us more stuff except strong fall semester grades” deferral.
I chatted with Michigan and then my mid year report was received…
i really hope end up getting in, I’m so in love with Mich!!
hi everyone! Mich has been my top choice for as long as I can remember and I was also deferred I have a 3.8 unweighted GPA with a 29 on the ACT. I also applied to LSA, but I am a preferred admit to the School of Education. I received straight A’s for this first semester. I have constantly demonstrated interest and I also emailed my regional counselor… unfortunately, I also got that automated response!! My fingers are crossed and I am really hoping for an acceptance. They say that this year is the hardest
I’d be happy with an automated response! better than nothing…
For the people that sent letters or emails, how long were they?? I don’t know if I should make mine kinda personal or keep it professional. Any advice??
“a friend on this sight said that before winter break his counselor received a letter saying that they deferred pretty much all highly qualified applicants”
That seems highly unlikely. I cannot imagine Michigan, or any university, admitting to deferring students simply because they are highly qualified. Of course, in any non-binding situation, the majority of universities will admit a mix of student that will ensure a well-rounded group that actually want to attend the university. Filling your campus with 4.0, 2400/36 type students who feel your university is beneath them and wish to be someplace else does not make for a healthy college environment. That being said, your statement above is incorrect. A large chunk of the students who were admitted EA were highly qualified. In fact, the only two EA students who were admitted from the UAE that I know of had 4.0 GPAs and solid test scores (one a 1470 in the CR+M section of the SAT and the other a 35 on the ACT). If you go through the EA pages on this forum, you will see many such students were deferred, but just as many were admitted. As such, I doubt that any such statement was done by the University because it would not even be accurate.
@Alexandre
All i was saying was that a FRIEND ON HERE SAID THAT. i dont know if it really happened or not, i dont go to his school or personally know him. And i know not ALL highly qualified students had been deferred. Ive seen a lot of the accepted students’ stats for class of 2019. Im just saying that many were deferred, and not ALL were accepted. I tied together the letter mentioned and the fact that many, NOT ALL, highly qualified students were deferred EA and THEORIZED that it was probably due to the fact a lot of the highly qualified would attend an Ivy League school. I am not 100% sure; im a student, not an admissions counselor.
I currently attend a michigan high school and know some people (both in-state and OOS) that have gotten into UMich with sub-avg. numerical stats (im talking 24-29 ACT and 3.7ish GPA). In example, my friend from indiana got in CoE EA with a 24 ACT and 3.7ish-3.8ish GPA.
umichmaybe, those are obviously outliers since the mid 50% of admitted students to Michigan have unweighed GPA’s in the 3.8-4.0 range, SATs in the 2040-2260 range and ACT in the 30-33 range. No matter how many applicants you know who were admitted to Michigan with “sub-avg. numerical stats”, they represent only a tiny percentage of the total who were admitted, and the acceptance rate for such students is under 1%, unless one comes from an extremely impoverished/hardship background, or is a recruited athlete. Many such students are also admitted in other elite universities by the way. I am not sure why anybody would bring up such cases. It gives hope to students who have virtually no hope of getting in. Winning the lottery is hardly a standard, so is getting into Michigan with such GPAs and scores. Just because you know someone who won the Mega Millions jackpot does not mean you will. Michigan is one of the top 15 universities in the US. Getting into it is extremely difficult. Top students will get rejections by the thousands. That’s how it goes with schools like Michigan, Berkeley, Northwestern, Georgetown, Penn, Cornell, Notre Dame, etc…Trying to rationalize the deferral of hundreds of accomplished students by pointing out the acceptance of less qualified students is pointless when you consider that Michigan will end up rejecting thousands of those less qualified students.

No one knows how our decisions will be like so we do not need to argue about it. Just let it happen and we will know pretty soon… Anyone heard from Michigan about when they are gonna first release the batches?
@Jboon12345 You sure?!?! wow
@Jboon12345 I cannot surely tell but your chance would be littlebit high match due to the fact that you GPA is below the average. But your other factors seem nice so that you do not need to worry! Could you tell me how you heard it in details? haha
@Jboon12345 Oh now I am so nervous about it. Hope you and I get in… My chance seems lower than yours due to my ACT thing which is 30. My GPA is 4.00 and Rank is 1/23 though
Which state or country are you from? @Jboon12345
Well I am international. haha @Jboon12345 I thought you were Korean… just regard it as typical illusion of seeing a person whose id looks similar to Korean name haha
Jboon, OOS applicants no longer have a 70%% chance of admission, even those with a perfect 4.0 GPA and perfect ACT/SAT scores. With a 3.6 GPA and an SAT score that falls right around the Michigan mean, I would say your chances of admission are no better than 25%.
@Jboon12345 I think everyone has a fair shot for this round. So we just need to wait until next week possibly. Do you think that I should call them to see to make it clear?
I still haven’t gotten a reply to my letter of interest and it’s been since 12/25
same here
I heard it really early
