Jboon, Michigan is as selective as the Ivy League (Cornell and Penn) for OOS students. This year’s admit rate will be in the 15%-20% range for OOS students. SAT/ACT range will be in the same ballpark as well. Strictly OOS and international applicants. Michigan is significantly easier to get into for in-state students. Michigan’s selectivity makes sense considering it is one of the top 15 universities in the country. So many top students dream of going to Michigan. Academics and prestige that match those of the Ivies, but better campus life. Plus Ann Arbor beats Ithaca, Hanover, Providence, New Haven and Philadelphia!
As for Florida being the 6th most represented state at Michigan, it also happens to be the 3rd most populous state in the country. I do not think Florida students are given any special consideration.
Jboon12345. Alexandre is knowledgeable about these matters. Please don’t be offended by his honest opinion. You should also know that if you do get accepted to Michigan, it’s something to be very proud of. I wish you the best and hope that you do get accepted and will matriculate to Ann Arbor as well. Please let us know if you get accepted or waitlisted in the RD round. Also, if you do get accepted and decide not to go, please let the admissions office know asap so other qualified applicants may be offered. Good luck!
@Alexandre - what is the in-state yield at Michigan? I was calculating the OOS acceptance rate based on published numbers for 2014 and I got ~25% acceptance rate and 25% yield for OOS if I assume 70% yield for instate.
The published numbers from 2014 I used are:
Total apps: 49776
Admitted: 16047
Enrolled: 6505
In-state apps: ~10000 (per some news item in Michigan daily)
In-state % of enrolled students: 60%
This gives (assume in-state yield=70%):
Total acceptance rate: 32%
Total yield: 41%
OOS apps: 39776
IS acceptance rate: 56%
OOS acceptance rate: 26%
OOS yield: 25%
For 2015, the most likely number that goes up would be the number of OOS apps and that will affect acceptance and yield.
Also, I could not find the breakdown of numbers for EA vs RD. It would be interesting to see that if anyone has reliable data…
jchan, your approximations seem fairly accurate to me. The 10,000 in-state applicant figure has remained fairly constant over the last 25 years. The OOS applicant figures is the difference between the overall size of the applicant pool and those 10,000 in-state applicants. This year, I am expecting 52,000-55,000 applicants overall. That would mean 42,000-45,000 OOS applications, of which 8,000-8,500 will be admitted, hence my 15%-20% acceptance rate.
Jboon, I agree 100% that university admissions is an unfair and frustrating game. And it is just that…a game. You have a realistic chance of getting into Michigan, but your GPA will sting, which is why I think the odds are not good. But if you apply to a good group of universities, I know you will get into some of them. Spread things out a little. Make sure you apply to at least one safety that you really like and a couple of targets that appeal to you as well.
does anyone know of the acceptance and deferral rates of EA vs RD? my regional counselor had said that there was a “record-breaking 27,000” EA applications total, therefore probably a total probably over 50k (as Alexandre expects). based on previous years, what could be an estimate for this year?
Here’s something to make you guys feel better about yourself: I was emailing my regional counselor and I misspelled the word “assess” as asses (it autocorrected). I sent an email with the plural form of ass in it. Goodbye to my admission lol
I keep in touch with my counselor and I really want to ask her when they are going to release our decisions… I mean I heard there will be some results next week but I am kind of afraid to call Michigan and direclty ask if they have any plans… Can someone do this for me
I never received a reply from my regional counselor to my continued interest letter, but I chatted with a rep today who said that they’re “really really” busy and they probably noted my interest. I still would have appreciated a reply, even if it was automated. Hopefully they did read it as it’s been weeks, but I plan on sending another email in the near future.
My school counselor hasn’t sent my mid year report yet either. I’m sure other schools are in the same boat, so I’m not sure how that will affect when the decisions are made.
