University of Michigan - Deferral Thread

I am really torn.

detpeace, I attend a smaller school just west of Detroit. About 800 students total, 8 of us applied to UofM EA.

Don’t fear, there is still hope! Good luck!

Stats

GPA 3.71UW/4.17W
ACT: 35 with 8 on writing
SATIIs: 800 in US History and 800 in World History
Out of state
Captain of Congressional Debate
Captain of Model UN
Captain of Spoken Word Poetry Team
Editor-in-Chief of biweekly school publication
Scholastic Bowl
Baseball
Theater/Improv Club
Essays were good, recs were also good

Not quite sure what to think here… hopefully this isn’t indicative of the rest of the application process, because if I wind up getting rejected from Michigan, most of the schools on my list are also not likely. Just have to wait and see.

What other schools has everyone applied to?

I applied to Michigan State, UofM - Dearborn, and Lawrence Tech. I’ve been accepted to all of them… Let’s hope I make it 4-0 in April.

GoodGuy96, I attend a small Detroit public school. 55 total seniors and 3 of us applied.

Thanks! Good luck to you in the spring! :)

For people who complain about in-state / out-of-state differentiation, U of M gets $271M from state of Michigan. University is partially funded by the tax payers in the state. Yet, U of M is going after money by offering record number of spots to out of state students.

Some within the state call it University of half Michigan already.

Deferred here also. I just finished first semester today and I made good grades so I’m just going to send in my report when I get back from winter break and see what happens.

Question to you all,
Do celebrities get bonus points in the admissions process (i’m not one, just curious).

deferred. what did everyone’s letters say??

Yeah, are there good and bad deferral letters.

everyone post your deferral letter!

@cadyheron Here is a copy paste

Dear Blank:

Thank you for your application to the University of Michigan College of Literature, Science, and the Arts for Fall 2014. We are pleased that you have applied and are impressed with your achievements. However, our high application volume, coupled with the very strong credentials of our applicants in recent years, has contributed to an increasingly competitive admissions process. As a result, we are writing to inform you that your application is currently being deferred for further review.

While this is not the answer that you were hoping to hear, your application remains under consideration. All final admissions decisions of admit, deny, or waitlist will be made no later than early April, 2014.

Strong fall semester or trimester grades may improve your status in the deferred pool of applicants. Therefore, please ask your high school counselor to forward them when they become available. Beyond that, we are confident that the information you have given us is more than sufficient for a final decision. The most successful candidates send us only what we require. Please refer to the website [Information for Deferred Students | University of Michigan Office of Admissions](http://www.admissions.umich.edu/deferred) for FAQ’s about the admission process and what to do next.

We hope your interest in Michigan continues. You have our best wishes for an enjoyable and successful end of your senior year.

Sincerely,

Theodore L. Spencer
Associate Vice Provost and Executive Director

I am sure the deferral letters are standardized? … Oh this sucks… My luck runs like this…I will commit to another school and U of M will admit after I have committed elsewhere? SOB!

That letter is not like mine…

This is the message I got:

Dear xxxx,

Thank you for your freshman application to the University of Michigan. After an initial individualized and comprehensive review of your application, we have determined that we will need additional information in order to make a final decision. We will not re-evaluate your application file until after our regular decision deadline of February 1, 2014. We need this additional information and time to ensure that we give your application the best possible review. We will notify you of a final decision on your application by early April.

The quality of grades earned in academic courses is one of several critical factors taken into consideration in evaluating a student’s competitive admissibility. To give your application a final evaluation, we will need your fall semester or first trimester grades. Because it is important that we receive these grades as soon as possible, please request to have a PDF of your grades sent from the issuing institution to our office via an e-transcript vendor or to ecredentials@umich.edu. If your counselor sent the initial School Report for your application through The Common Application online portal, they will need to complete the 2013-2014 MidYear Report using the same method. Otherwise, please ask your high school counselor to fax a report of these grades to our office at 734-936-0740.

Be sure your U-M ID XXXXXXXX is on all materials submitted to the Office of Undergraduate Admissions.

We appreciate your interest in the University of Michigan and look forward to receiving the information requested. If you have specific follow-up questions, please visit http://umich.custhelp.com or phone 734-764-7433. We look forward to reviewing your completed application and appreciate your interest in the University of Michigan.
