University of Michigan Deferred Applicants Class of 2022

So I have a 3.91 UW gpa and have taken 6 APs (3 this year). I am in state and have a 1400 with a 1430 superscore. Also, I have a 770 on math and 630 in reading with a 660 superscored. I have around 110 community service hours and am involved in 2 Leadership clubs, am the president of diversity club, played soccer for 3 years, in and out of school, and track for one. I took a school trip to Perú as well to improve my Spanish. I applied to the COE. Is there anything I can do to improve my chances? Could the grades on those 3AP’s be what they’re really waiting for? Lastly, how competitive is the COE vs LSA? Be honest. I won’t get hurt by suggestions or comments.

Oh, and I got a 767 on my writing

I’m still confused about the LOCI, what are the advantages and disadvantages to sending one?

RKD2: You say the following as if it’s a fact, but you are still just speculating and giving people false hope that their apps have not yet been reviewed. My DS got BOTH letters. People need to assume what they know, and don’t guess about what they don’t know. Admissions reviewed their application and for whatever reason, they were deferred and are still under consideration. If they finish the semester strong, it can only help to submit grades.

“If people get a letter with the phrase ‘after an individualized review’ the think your stats are low. for the others they have not completed the review.”

To show continued interest. If 10 people got the deferred letter and only 50% respond with continued interest that decreases the pool to pick from. If you are the admission person and are reading two identical candidates, one with continued interest and one without… Whom would you pick?

who do i send the LOCI to if im OOS??

I am sure you also have a regional admission person. You can look it up on the university of Michigan website. I am sure that you can Google it also

@Knowsstuff Thanks! :slight_smile:

Could anyone please answer my questions above?

Good Luck and let us know how it turns out. Just have other schools ready to go. Students seem to all be happy where they actually end up even if it’s not their first choice.

Hunter :Coe 3.91 and Lsa- 3.84 according to the engineering talk this year. No one cares about your AP scores just that you challenged yourself which is great.

People will differ on this advice but I would reach out to your regional counselor and your school counselor. Also if you are with in a comfortable distance to the school say one hour go talk with the head of admissions at Coe or the like. Only if you are a good communicator. A lot Coe kids are not, at least yet. You are not pleading your case but just finding out more about the program. You can let them know it’s really where you want to be but don’t push that to much. If you did a local interview sometimes that person can help also. Meeting with a professor or student advisor can help also. Michigan has peer to peer advisors in engineering and they are usually helpful and kinda understand your situation since they just went through it.

Again, it’s not really about you. This is just one big game and you have to have a good outlook. You did everything right. You will be somewhere next year and it will be great!

@hunter21 - I post my D experience with UMich deferral @ post 159 on this thread. Our family was in the same shoe 2 years ago. No explanation, no second guessing can turn back that ugly feeling of “what went wrong” or “what else could we have done more”. I think your grades are within the range of UMich accepted kids, but do many many others in that range. There is no way to gauge what they are looking for. My eldest D was the 1st kiddo in our generation to attend UMich, and her scores were good (ACT 34, GPA 3.85 uw, 4.21 w, neuroscience major) and was accepted thru EA round. No issue. Our second D has the best overall academic profile (SAT 2280, GPA 3.9uw, 4.3+w) with a slightly weaker EC profile but she was deferred, and ultimately wait-listed (BME major). Our S, from GPA standpoint alone is the weakest due to sport injuries in Frosh yr (and have to miss school on many days), but he got in with 1510 SAT and multiple SAT IIs (3 in total, all 770+) and go for a biophysics major. My point is - you just never know. I had thought my second D would be a shoo-in and my S would have very low chance to get in due to the low overall GPA. But I was dead wrong. As we are winding down for the this application season, make sure you will use your time wisely. Take the focus of UMich off the table, put the energy into writing new essays, applying new schools. We did that with our second D two yrs ago. All the x’mas plans were cancelled. All we did that holiday was writing, rewriting, and editing essays. My second D applied 5 more schools, and she got into CMU in RD w/o issues. Good luck with your journey in this unpredictable process and I am sure there is a great school waiting for you to attend.

Hi can I ask you a question? My son got defer last week Dec 2017,and they want him to send his mid year grades base on your experience what do you think gpa 3.7 act 34 lots of AP classes.thank you

If your feeling bummed about getting deffered, don’t worry. There is undeniable still hope! I have a 4.0 UW GPA 1470 SAT with a 780 Math score, a 4 or 5 on 5 different AP tests including a 5 on the calc and chemistry exam and countless service activities, extracurricular activities, and leadership roles including team captains, and club presidents, and I was deffered. The University of Michigan is a highly selective and competitive school, and as such it takes time to properly process the copious amounts of applications. I know how stressful waiting can be, but be patient!

Hi everyone! Exactly 3 years ago I was deferred from the University of Michigan, and I was absolutely dejected. Fast forward to now, I am writing this in my junior year at UofM, holding a perfect 4.0 GPA through five semesters. If its meant to be, it will be! I can promise you that. Good luck to you all, and have a very Merry Christmas!

Also, I work-study in the Office of Undergraduate Admissions. There is ABSOLUTELY NO DIFFERENCE between any deferral letters you receive. It’s sort of become a joke among us students how people believe one is better or different than the other.

Where do I find the name of the regional admission officer on their website? We are located in CA

Does uMich not consider ACT scores without the writing section?
Would sending in a better ACT scored improve my chances even though I did not take it with writing?

Can anyone think of a reason why I got deferred from College of Engineering?
