Note that most of the RD at other schools do not even have a single admission released. Many schools also have an April 1 release date with nothing announced before that. UMich has a deadline of RD release in early April while most of the admission notice are released by the end of March. It is far better than many schools. They never promise a result before early April and you are aware of that before submitting the application.
There is a thread you should read before you call UMich ridiculous.

Why would you accept an offer in a different school before the due date and exclude Michigan? You aren’t harmed by waiting.
@uknewnenglanddad Applied EA for a reason. Private housing opportunity is available to me if I choose in state, local University but my decision must be made very soon in order to be included. Applied EA with UMich for the purpose of knowing early. Decision was ‘deferred’ which is no help at all nor is it a ‘decision’.
Was accepted with very nice packages, financial and merit, to 2 awesome Universities in state. Now, my housing offer deadline is closing in. Waiting until the end of March for a real decision then waiting on financials for OOS, which is another ‘wait for Michigan’ may just blow my opportunity here in state. I may not even be able to afford UMich after all the waiting.
UMich was probably a reach anyway.
I suspect the reason a wave of acceptances was not released last week was due to the ED2 schools reelase. When students are admitted ED2 they must withdraw other applications including Michigan. It would have made no sense to offer acceptances to these students. This way, the deferred list can be pared down through withdrawals of numerous ED2 accepted names this week and provide better opportunities for those left on the list, since many ED2 applicants also include Michigan as a backup school. Some of the ED2 schools include American University, Boston University, Brandeis University, Bucknell University, Colgate University, Emory University, George Washington University, Lehigh University, New York University, Northeastern University, Tufts University, University of Chicago, Vanderbilt University.
@Avster1 Ah yes, that makes sense. This way applicants that did not ED2 have a better shot at getting into UMich.
@UMhopeful12 EA is long over. Deferral just means not accepted in EA. The decision has been made. So forget about it. It is now RD and deferred from EA is re-considered as RD. It is just like applying to another schools in RD. You should focus on the school(s) you have admitted already. Nothing is holding you back if there is deadline for anything. Make the housing arrangement if there is no other news before the deadline. Some schools would even ask for a housing deposiit months ago.
@Avster1 That is another nonsense speculation. If the reviewing process is finished, they would not holding back the list and wait for other schools. They have already considered that in the yield rate estimation. That’s why they admit ~15,000 to fill the ~7000 seats. It is overwhelming enough to go through the 70,000 applications. Why would they delay the process? There is nothing new in the admission process for other schools this year.
@UMhopeful12 you have two instate offers with merit. Get excited about those prospects. Just a speculation but if you are spending less then $35,000 in state I don’t think you will fare better at out of state University of Michigan. Make a decision (great that you have two awesome schools with merit) and put down a deposit. Worse case scenario is that you lose your deposit and you can look at it as a deposit to your future. If Michigan comes through with a similar or better package then you still have a choice to make. We were in a similar situation two years ago with my daughter after she was accepted and waiting to Emerson in Boston. They gave her very little money but the number 1school for her field. She had two private schools fighting over her offering her large scholarships. She ended up at one of the private schools but she is currently changing her focus. If she went to Emerson she would not be allowed to change her focus and just be out of the program Things happen for a reason and usually play out for the best.
Respectfully disagree. A number of Michigan EA applicants who got deferred ended up applying ED2 elsewhere as a hedge. Chances are they were also rejected from their ED1 schools, especially from the Ivy League. Had they gotten into Michigan EA (their second choice) a percentage would not have bothered to even apply ED2 elsewhere. Now that the ED2 schools have released, the Michigan deferred list will automatically be pared down.
@Avster So what would UMich do? Wait for the ED result and remove the applicants from the list? Then there would be no release for weeks. What is new in the ED of other school this year?
This is worse than the Tufts syndrome speculation, as it is holding all admission instead of the so called “over-qualified” candidates.
One should not be surprised with the delay as the number of applicants increased so much. It is likely far exceeded their expectation when they hired and trained the readers in last summer shortly after the announcement of increased FA.
The ED2 decisions came out over the past two weeks so that part is now over. Those accepted students remove their Michigan applications.
@billcsho just joking here but you would think with all the analytics out there that someday this could happen. Maybe make a future national database for college applications and if you accept an rd offer you are automatically removed from the lists to colleges. This would pare down the list and maybe make this a better process.
Sorry Ed offer… Couldn’t edit for some reason
@Knowsstuff There was a discussion on a universal admission process. Until then, it is not likely to happen.
@Avster You assume the withdrawal is the first thing the ED admitted students would do. Also, assume the adcom is that efficient to update the list within a week. Even if that is the case, they just need to remove those from the admitted list instead of holding the results. Again, UMich does not care about that as it has been already considered in the yield. They do not expect everyone to attend. They have a huge wait list if they ever need to admit more students after May 1.
@billcsho Exactly, I didn’t apply RD. I applied EA. The housing is not through a school it is private housing. And I won’t ‘forget about it’ regarding EA, deferred or otherwise until March 1st when I make my decision.
@UMhopeful12 just remember no school is worth going into major debt for. If your able to share your choices I would be curious to know but again no school is worth going into debt in this day and age.
@Knowsstuff Miami of Ohio and University of Akron. Engineering programs, both honors. Akron is a secret gem.
@UMhopeful12 I know many people at Miami of Ohio also and they love the school. There are many smaller schools like Akron with awesome programs. Just a FYI. My son did a year long high school program called Ace mentoring. It is an engineering program during the year. They worked at world known companies to learn engineering with engineering mentors. The mentors were all from known schools like Berkeley, Georgia tech and smaller schools like what you mentioned. They were all hired by the same world class companies. Again, it’s just not worth going into debt over.
Okay this might be a stupid question, but after reading this thread for a while and seeing that a lot of people say they check the portal all the time (like me) to see if their decision has been changed, I’m curious. Will Michigan send an email before updating the portal, or will they just do it unannounced? Like will they send an email saying “Your decision will be released soon” or like “We’ve released your decision, go check the portal” or something like that? Or will they just randomly put it in there? (I’ve only heard back from my two EA schools and none of my RD schools so that’s why I have no idea)
@smlsml4444 Your portal will update without warning, before you get an email.
Source: Admitted EA.
Ugh… this whole situation of just waiting with no final decision just makes me feel depressed… I get that Umich office of undergrad admissions has a lot on their plate but the extended wait for a decision is practically agonizing especially when umich is your top choice
