Hello
I’m writing because I was recently deferred as an EA applicant to U of Mich LSA for the class of 2022.
I feel like I had a decent GPA (95.44% / 100%) and strong SAT scores (SAT 1: 1560/1600 and 3 SAT 2 scores for Math II, Chemistry, and World History (800, 770, 780 respectively)), along with strong extracurriculars and a decent why michigan essay. I feel like my grades were not the reason I was deferred, because I saw students at my school who got in with lower grades.
Michigan is my first choice school, and in the letter of deferral (both on the Wolverine Access and through Email) I got the same letter saying “Strong recent grades that are available before mid-February 2018 may improve your status in the deferred pool of applicants. Therefore, please ask your high school counselor to forward them when they become available. Beyond that, we are confident that the information you have given us is more than sufficient for a final decision. The most successful candidates send us only what we require.” This part gave me hope because my 1st semester of senior year is 1.2 points higher than my junior year (went from 94.44 to 95.625) despite taking 2 more APs than junior year (3 to 5). I’m hoping that my senior year GPA will show consistency and even improvement despite a heavier courseload.
Along with my improved transcript I am also sending a LOCI to the U-M admissions < Michigan.Admissions@umich.edu > as well as my regional admissions counselor.
I’m really anxious, and have a couple questions. 1) is there anything else I can do to help my deferral case or do I just have to wait? and 2) can the regular admissions result come out as early as January? one of my upperclassmen was deferred last year but his regular decision result came out in january after the admissions officers’ winter breaks were over. and 3) how will I know if I get a new decision? Since the decision is rolling, do I have to constantly check the Wolverine Access, or do I get an official email?
just send the letter of continued interest and showcase amazing grades. Add an extracurricular or do something big in terms of community involvement to maybe help you stand out more.
January admission is usually a sign of insufficient time to finish all EA applications. It happened in the past but not a regular practice or in large batch. In the news article a few years ago, they said there are around 500 or so applicants each year that they could not come to a decision by the deadline, not because of the but the credentials. Some of those may be admitted after the break. 4 years ago, they have a lot of January admissions due to the CommonApp issue and the deadline was postponed by 2 weeks. Other than that, don’t expect the first round of RD notice until February.
I got deferred too.
I have 1520 for SAT, SAT Math II 800, SAT chem 800, all 5 for five APs in grade in grade 11, and an average of 95…
But I got accepted to Emory University ED…]
I am quite confused too haha.
@FritoBandita: According to someone I spoke with in the admissions office, the RD decisions begin coming in mid-February, and continuing through mid-April.
UMich is a highly selective school and I hope you will get in in RD! I am lucky to get into Emory and also wish you luck! You are a very competitive candidate!
Knowsstuff: Did your son also get an email on January 12 of last year or did he only receive a letter in the mail dated January 12? Was his portal updated on that day, too?
@georgette. I really don’t know. I just happened to go into his room and looked at the acceptance letter. He did get an email also and portal update but can’t be certain what those dates are.
Hi I got defered too from LSA. I sent in my Mid year grades. I’m not sure how this letter of continued intrest works. Can somebody please help me out. Thanks!
My son for deferred EA to CoE. He sent an email LOCI to the admissions person designated to his school. It was short, just let them know he pleased to still be in the running basically and let them know Michigan was his first choice school, which it is, and that if accepted he would come. That’s basically it. His grades will be sent as requested. We aren’t doing anything else. He received an immediate response that was clearly a templates response saying the info would be considered with his application for regular decision and then just repeated the same info as was stated in the deferral notice. We will not do anything further. What will be will be. Good luck!
@Blizzard1 - I don’t see anything in the UM literature that says other applications must be withdrawn if you are admitted under ED. It is not a binding early action program. This is my understanding, if I’m wrong please feel free to correct me.
Some schools are requiring proof if you say you can’t afford the Ed school but get accepted to another like school. Ivies are cracking down on this also. I would talk with your parents and your school since both had to sign agreement clauses to allow you to do ED.
Again you can back out for financial reasons but the schools have every right to contact your accepted school etc, etc. And you might need to prove you can’t go to your ED school.
