University of Michigan EA class of 2020 thread

Thanks @woah16

@GoPack87 I believe they do drop electives, but I am not sure about theology.

@GoPack87 I don’t know, they say they’re holistic so you think they’d consider non-core classes, but if you’re applying to COE or something it’s possible they’d take those out.

Here is a link form the Umich Tumblr about recalculated GPAs.

http://umichadmissions.■■■■■■■■■■/post/110658692919/so-it-says-yalls-average-gpa-is-382-i-believe

So is anyone getting their hopes up they could come out tomorrow since they did a few years ago?!

@GoPack87 I visited back in October and on one of the slides of the powerpoint during the info session, they had what kind of classes would be considered in the recalculated GPA. I don’t remember them exactly, but I’m sure you could find them somewhere on the admissions website.

@MidwestIsBest okay good, that article makes me feel better lol.

I just read an article that says Michigan may keep “select” religion courses, whatever that means… HOWEVER, it also said that they essentially don’t consider freshman grades at all, which is extremely upsetting for me lol

Here’s the link if anyone’s curious: http://www.wsj.com/articles/SB105899458688282900

Also, another follow up question. When Michigan releases all of the admissions data is the average gpa they list according to their own special recalculations or is it just the unweighted values? Sorry I’m getting super nitpicky but I’m just really curious.

That article is from 2003. Not so sure that things have not changed.

Wait, so Michigan throws out freshman year grades? That doesn’t make sense to me…

@coffee18 I really wouldn’t worry about it, that article was written when you were like 5 or 6 years old, a lot’s changed haha.

My essay doesn’t have any school-specific/unique sentences in terms of being there because I was never able to visit (i live in Virginia and my parents said it was too much of a hassle to go there), but I do talk about how when I discovered it and looked into stats and programs in the school it became my first choice. does that seem like enough specific interest? i had no idea people treated it as a safety at the time so it never occurred to me to separate myself out from that

@coffee18 here’s a umich tumblr post about freshman grades http://umichadmissions.■■■■■■■■■■/post/90668533964/does-u-of-m-not-look-at-freshmen-year-gpa

lmao I had basically all B+'s/B’s in freshman year and then it just shot up in sophomore year

Wow, this really does get intense as you approach the decision. Reminds me of the quote from the final Harry Potter “I open at the close.” Good luck to everyone. Clearly a committed group of applicants, regardless of the outcome.

note to self: tumblr > wall street journal :stuck_out_tongue:

Any other IB kids Michigan hopefuls? I’ve heard a lot of good things about IB and Michigan, and I’m hoping that it’s going to work to my advantage.

Michigan does consider freshman grades into GPA calculations, they used to not do so up until 2009 I believe.

Sorry if this has already been asked, but how does Mich recalculate the GPA? Some people have said they do not recalculate anymore, but the Tumblr post which said they recalculate was posted 10 months ago, meaning the recalculated GPA for last year’s applicants, so I am going to assume they follow the same pattern this year. Thanks!
