Hi, I’m currently in another Big Ten school (one of the better ones). I am planning on transferring to UMich as I am not socially happy at my current university. I have seen the prereqs on the UMich website and am in the process of taking courses that are equivalent to those and will transfer over. I have finished most of the prereqs, and will be taking calc 3 over the summer. I plan on applying by the end of the summer for the winter 2016 pool. I will only have physics 2 and Diff Eqn’s left for the first semester of the sophomore year, which I will finish before hopefully starting at UMich. If I get an A for calc 3, my math science GPA would be around a 3.35 (excluding physics 3 and Diff eqn’s). I would be applying for Industrial Engineering. I just wanted to know what factors the Admissions Department looks at and if I have a realistic chance of getting in. UMich has been my dream school ever since I was a kid and this past year has been quite hard as I have been recently diagnosed with a learning disorder (and wasn’t able to get accommodations until late into my second semester, which did indeed affect my grades). I was also dealing with depression as my parents were close to divorcing. In spite of all these negative experiences, I was still able to get decent grades. Also, I would like to know how UMich recalculates the GPA. My school has a weird way of calculating GPA and we calculate it on a different scale.
When I talked to the Transfer Engineering department, they said they don’t consider the school you come from and only your GPA. However, how is this fair? It’s obviously much easier to get good grades at a community college than it is at a prestigious four year university like Uillinois/Purdue/UWisconsin. Please help me out and give me some advice/pointers. Really desperate. Have been very depressed I didn’t get in the first time.
