University of Michigan Engineering

I have a 35 on the ACT, a 4.0 gap (all A's), 2 years of a varsity sport, presidency in a science research club I founded, NHS, JSA, DECA, and a youth council club that works with the school board. I also have 4 Ap exams, with two 5's and 2 4's. I have an 800 on the math sat subject, a 790 on the biology subject, and a 780 on the apush subject test. Do I have a good chance of getting into the Umich undergraduate engineering program? I can write decent essays and get decent rec letters also. I am doing an internship this summer as well.

Yes
You do have a pretty good shot with your stats, provided your essays and rec letters are good.

If you’re OOS, can you afford their tuition? BTW, they only require one essay. If the midwest is a target destination, you should also consider Purdue, UoI champaign and Rose-Hulman

I live in Michigan, so it’d be really convenient for me to go to Umich over the majority of other colleges

You are in state and I don’t see why you would have any doubt getting into UMich CoE. It would be at least a low match for you. You may be able to get the Engineering Scholarship of Honors and the Regent Scholarship too. In addition to the CommonApp essay, you need to write a couple supplemental essays including one usually “Why this school”. To write a good essay in this topic, you really need to know the school. Find out the details about CoE at UMich on their website and attend the TechDay in Fall. Find out which program and clubs you are interested in. Give specific names of the program/club in your essay.
Purdue would be a nice back up school and they offer good scholarships too. UIUC sucks for FA for oos.

@billcsho @asdfiji Good tips with the essay. Remember, the “why us” essay is still about you! Don’t write an essay listing all the great things about the university. Tell them why you like it, and how it fits your goals.

^^^ Exactly. Don’t make it like a promotion advertisement for the CoE.
