I was wondering what my chances at Umichigan engineering are. I have a 32 ACT and 3.9 UW and a 4.2 W. I’ve had a lot of people tell me I’m a good candidate for engineering but I want an unbiased opinion because my major is in both LSA and engineering so I could apply either.
Also if it helped I do have sub scores on the ACT of Math: 31, Science: 34, English: 35, and Reading: 34. This gives me a super score of 34, and although I am aware that Michigan does not superscore directly I sent all my score because I found this on their admissions website:
The University of Michigan does not superscore an applicant’s test results; we will use the highest composite score from any one test date (regardless of whether or not it was the most recent test taken). Please note, however, that because the U-M admission review process is holistic, we are able to consider all of an applicant’s individual subscores from all of the applicant’s test results sent to our office. We will use test results to make an applicant as competitive as possible.
I’m not sure what this means, so if anyone knows if this helps my chances or if my chances are good or not it would be much appreciated.
Your Math score is low for CoE while your ACT is also below admission average. You would have a better chance at LSA although it may still be a reach for you if from OOS.
I would listen to billcsho…he is the master here…Applying out of state to LSA is tough enough. If you get in to LSA you can easily transfer into engineering at the end of your freshman year. It is called a cross campus transfer. You lose nothing in the process and take all the same classes as engineering except one English class that is more engineering writing specific . All engineering students take their classes with the LSA students the first year. My son is out of state, Michigan was the only school he did not apply directly into engineering (he got accepted into like 4 in the top 10 engineering programs ranked among a host of lower rated programs). He was looking at Actuary also for a brief second. During his visits to Michigan he did not go on the tours since he has been there before but had one on one meetings with the engineering heads and actuary department chairs. The engineering dept actually asked us why he didn’t apply directly and he said since his school didn’t have many kids go directly into Michigan engineering last year he decided to to the transfer. He went to the number one school in our state with an avg 31 Act. He had a 3.9nw and 34 ACT with 35 Math/Science . This was after several tries and yes he sent in all the test scores. They like kids that don’t give up! So his schedule this semester was Chem with lab, physics with lab, calc and sociology. 18 credits which is alot. With working 3 days a week and playing flag football at 10:30pm on Sundays…it can be done. This semester he has Calc 2, programming for engineers, english and econ 101(business minor). He has been to a new meet up on his technology interest and just joined a new one through University of Michigan with 7 faculty members in attendance. Not one asked or cared if he was in engineering currently. But all supported the group. They will be writing software this year for students to use augmented reality on tours etc. Several faculty told about grants that they have to help in other avenues. Again, not one asked about which student was or wasn’t in engineering. Sorry for the diatribe, but I think to many kids don’t think clearly about this option. Good Luck.
@knowsstuff Well I am in state but I have heard it is very hard to get in. We had 2 students from my school (small school with graduating class of about 30) apply and get in with 31 on the ACT and they have both encouraged me to apply direct, but I love the school and don’t want to not go just because I applied direct.
I would talk with your high school counselor and this is a great question for the regional counselor as well. Also calling the engineering department was really helpful for information. I spoke with Bryan Enochs, who is associate director of recruitment and engineering and admissions for engineering. He was very helpful. Lsa last year was like 3.84 and engineering was 3.91 grade point with I think 32 Lsa Act and 34 Act engineering average.
