“The University of Michigan Board of Regents has unanimously fired school President Mark Schlissel for cause following an investigation into a relationship with a subordinate, the board announced Saturday evening.”
“Stupid is as stupid does.”
Base salary was $927,000 per year.
And they published all of the communications. Ouch.
How many scandals now? Sexual abuse scandal, provost Philbert’s sexual misconduct, Ron Weiser (Regent) calling for political violence, mouthing off misogynistic remarks, and secretly paying a politician to drop out of the primaries, and now this.
I think that USC is heaving a sigh of relief - they’re no longer the most scandal-plagued university out there…
Let me know when SNL spoofs Michigan, like they did for USC:

And then there was the Reggie Bush (football) and O.J. Mayo (basketball) scandals, which included the stripping of the 2004 BCS Football Championship title as well as Bush’s Heisman trophy, all 2005 (following season) football wins and the basketball program forfeiting all its wins from the 2007-2008 season.
And then there was the whole Lane Kiffin “deflate gate,” with Kiffin blaming it all on the student manager. smh
And, and, then there was Josh Shaw, USC CB, who sprained two ankles jumping from a building to save his nephew who was allegedly drowning, but actually, he had an argument with his girlfriend and lied about the whole heroism thing.
The list is immense. And I’m sure I missed A LOT of stuff.
All the while Michigan has moved from #29 to #23 in the USNWR rankings in the past 5-ish years. And USC has slipped to #27.
The communications pdf was highly entertaining…may or may not have read all 118 pages. Man has an awful Pizza House order.
USC just overhead saying, "Hold my beer . . . . "
Don’t worry, Michigan is full of highly intelligent and talented people, and they still have time to catch up.
PS. rankings always lag behind events, so we haven’t seen the end of this yet. Still, while they do have a ways to go to catch up with USC, they seem hell-bent on trying to do so.
BTW, Lincoln Riley was recently named the new head football coach at USC, coming from Oklahoma. Bigger microscope in LA. Tick, tock…
I’m sure your post will age gracefully. We’ll revisit it in 5 years.
I have my popcorn ready, no matter what comes out.
Agree! Though if he were writing to anyone but a co-worker these would have to be considered evidence of the most unsalacious affair ever. “How busy are you….Wish we could sit next to each other…Do you get a lot of thinking done when driving thru corn fields……”. “I like it when you say “oh yes” was as heated as it got. My goodness even staid Prince Charles managed to have a “ racier” affair.
Michigan flagship public universities have been on a roll with scandals the past few years.
I am always amazed how senior leaders in academia, business, politics, media or the military get into scandals due to inappropriate relationships with subordinates, especially after the “Me Too” movement started. Did they not think it would end badly? I realize in many of these positions, they spend inordinate amounts of time with employees - often more than with their spouse, if they are married - but they could not find “companionship” outside the workplace?
Unfortunately, the heart wants what it wants…
The body part that you’re thinking of is lower down…
Just trying to keep it classy.
It just amazes me that these seemingly brilliant people just couldn’t open up a separate Gmail account and have at it… Lol
I honestly don’t think he was looking for “ companionship” and sought it out at work. Based on these almost boring exchanges this wasn’t trying to engage in some titillating affair. It was falling in love or at least in deep affection with someone because you’re spending so much time with them. It’s a stupid thing to act on those feelings though.
Popcorn ready?
“And one particular piece that speaks to security is being really intentional about keeping social gatherings in common spaces and public spaces.”
Hats off to USC! I hope my kid’s university (wherever that turns out to be ) adopts this strategy. We have to change what we’re doing, because obviously what we’re doing is not working.
