I was recently accepted to the University of Michigan, and will be attending (so excited!). As I am beginning to look at housing, I am strongly considering ranking a single dorm as my first choice. What is the likeliness of a freshmen receiving a single dorm? Is it a very low chance? Just wondering if I should not expect a single room and begin my search for a roommate for this upcoming Fall.
I don’t go to UMich, but from what I’ve heard it’s extremely unlikely that freshmen get single dorms; it is this way for many colleges. Maybe you’ll be able to indicate a preference, however.
I’ve seen it happen. Not a lot though. However, I do recommend against it. One of your goals for freshman year is to make friends, and having a single dorm kind of makes that harder. I personally would say that you could benefit from living in a double.
Sure, one in two freshman will have roommate problems at some point, but being able to share a living space with others is an important skill to have. Otherwise, unless you are super rich, you will have a hard time affording the rent for many apartments in the future.
Singles are rare for freshman. If you want to do a dorm sophomore year and get a double, it’s much more likely.
To back up what @umcoe16 is saying, you should try to get a double. Having a roommate kind of encourages you to be social with your hall and pushes your boundaries in learning what you can tolerate from a roommate and what things you can work on in yourself as a roommate moving forward
I received a single both years at U of M! I joined the RC and it was guaranteed beyond that for housing since it was reserved just for RC students. You may consider doing so!
I had both a double and a single. Even with a great roommate, you sleep better with a single which is a huge help if you have early classes. I doubt you will have much of an issue interacting with others on your floor. If you don’t get one check to see if your dorm has a waiting list.
Thank you! Your response was really helpful! I will definitely check.
