University of Michigan is ranked 6 in Kiplinger's list of Best Values in Public Colleges and is ranked 83 among all colleges.

I’m somewhat disappointed with those figures. We have significantly higher (5k to 10k more) avg. debt than many of our peers. I hope the university’s initiative to provide more financial aid to out of state students could help improve those figures.

UNC and UVA (#1 and #2 on Kiplinger’s list) aren’t a good value to me because their engineering/ science programs leave more to be desired.

Value depends on price, and essentially everyone pays a different price. You can’t value rank something that is dynamically priced.

I agree with @YZamyatin . Ours was a fairly typical case of folks who are not eligible for any need-based aid. My D2 got acceptances at GTech, UMich and UCB (amongst other colleges) for ChemE. She did not get any merit aid/scholarships from any of these 3 and being from PA, we were on the hook to pay full fare. UCB and UMich were 11k more per year than GTech. So, the top two for consideration became GTech and UCB. After much deliberation, we decided on GTech, as we decided that the 40k+ we would thereby save would go towards her MS/MBA down the road.
