University of Michigan? Michigan State University? Chance me! (Senior Currently...)

GPA: 3.83 UW (I got a few Bs As in my AP classes 1st semester of junior year  but got As the second semester)
Rank: 19/209
SAT: 1300 (second highest in my school), but taking ACT on October 22
APs: AP US History, AP Calculus, AP Biology, AP Chemistry, AP Spanish, AP Lang, AP Lit

EC:

  • At NMU (Northern Michigan University), a local University, I was Volunteer Camp Counselor for 162.5 hours during the summer between Freshman and Sophomore Year
  • NHS (National Honor Society) in Sophomore year, Second Semester - Member; Junior Year - Member; Senior year - Vice President
  • Founded and created the free and only Tutoring Center at our school, through NHS, which immediately became a huge resource that is consistently used by the student body
  • Key Club: Sophomore year - Member; Junior Year - Bulletin Editor/Officer; Senior Year - Head of Committee Chair/Officer.
  • Through Key Club, I participated in a Yuda Bands fundraiser for kids in Africa and Nicaragua, raised money for Children’s Miracle Network, and helped out with local volunteering, such as School Athletic events and roadside cleanups.
  • HOSA (Health Occupation Students of America). My Junior year - Member; and Senior year - President. I won the 2nd place in the Regional Competition in the topic: Pathophysiology.
  • Environmental Club, my Sophomore & Junior year - Member
  • Poetry Out Loud Participant
  • For my A.P. Biology Class, I hosted some fundraisers: We sold Test-Survival kits for fundraising money to a trip to Chicago and hosted a pancake breakfast at a local restaurant. There was a committee made to raise funds for students who were not able to pay the costs of the trip, of which I was President.
  • Rotary International Summer Youth Exchange: traveled to Spain for one month, with local Rotary Club. It was an amazing trip that allowed me the greatest opportunity to improve my Spanish-speaking skills and reflect on cultural and societal differences between the US and Spain.
  • Spring Break of Junior Year, Second Semester, 2016: a class trip to the Dominican Republic to be immersed in the culture and lifestyle of the natives. Throughout that week of break, my class and I were, fortunately, able to volunteer at the Centro Cultural Guanin. I volunteered with taking care of the babies, teaching teenagers English, and help the older locals cook for the kids.
  • CAYA (Central American Youth Ambassadors): Student hosted from Dominican Republic - Sophomore Year; Guatemala - Junior Year. I also applied to be a part of CAYA (and myself travel to Central America), and was one of the three accepted, although I had to decline due to my conflicting schedule with the Rotary International Summer Youth Exchange to Spain. In result, I was able to benefit my from my trip to Spain, and allowed another student from Wisconsin to attend this program in my place, and I will be happy to say I will be hosting another student through CAYA in my Senior Year.
  • For U of M specifically, I did a two-week Math and Science Scholars program this past summer at the university, which I mentioned in my essay as to “Why Michigan?”.

For my financial situation, even though I live with my mom in Michigan, and I go to a Michigan public school, I am not supported by her. I am supported by my Dad who lives in California, and who is currently retired and only making about $31,000 - $32,000 annually. He supports himself, me, but he also supports my brother. My brother is 12, currently a Freshman in high school, and in the same high school as me. My brother and I are also dependents on my Dad’s tax return.

I have been in the Honor Roll, specifically the ‘Outstanding Academic Achievement Award’ recipient, since the first semester of my Freshman year. The award does not include any monetary gain, but an is an acknowledgement of the hard work and endless effort put into his or her studies, including me.

I plan to go into Pre-med, with a Major in Bio, and Minor in Spanish and Russian.

As for foreign languages, both my parents are European immigrants. My mom is originally from Ukraine and my dad is originally from Romania. They moved here, wanting to have their children in the United States so they have better experiences and opportunities than they did. Throughout living with my dad and mom, and now with my mom and step-dad, I have spoken Russian my whole life. Although I am not completely fluent, as I never took any Russian language classes, I plan to be able to broaden my speaking, writing, and reading abilities in Russian.

I don’t play spots or music.

My essays are very, very strong. All my english professors have concluded in unison that my essays are absolutely awesome.

My information is kinda detailed. Let me know what you think!

For UMich LSA from in state, you still have a chance. Try to bring up your test score. October Act would be late for EA unless you have submitted the application with your SAT score before deadline first. RD would be okay.

@billcsho After talking with my admissions officer for my region, she said that I could still apply for EA and say that I took the ACT test on October 22, so she will put me on a waitlist in her ‘electronic queue’ and then review my application when I get my score. Technically, I would be reviewed with my ACT score, but probably later than usual.

WOW
just wow

You need higher scores.

UMich and the other schools are NOT going to use your dad’s modest income to determine aid. You live in Mich
and with your mom. HER income will be used and you won’t get aid.

That said, it sounds like your dad pays child support to your mom, but likely your mom is still also supporting you in some way
unless your dad pays a HIGH amount of child support for you and any siblings.

If you want to go to med school, which will require HUGE loans, you need to borrow very little for undergrad.

Also
you should not want to go to a school like UMich and maybe not MSU if you’re premed. Your premed classmates will likely be a stronger student than you are and you’d get weeded out.

You have a good chance. Ignore what she’s saying^^. I’m applying to Ann Arbor this fall too, and I know some guy who got in with a 25 ACT. If you’re essays are as good as you said, you shouldn’t be worried.

Not sure why you said “wow”?

I’m taking the October ACT test in a couple weeks, which is estimated to be 30+ (practice tests with consistent 30+ scores). I’m sending in my SAT score with my application, since they DO need a score. However, after talking with my advisor, she said that she won’t look at my application until she gets my ACT score, since I stated I will be taking that test in my common app.

After talking with UMich financial aid officers, they said that after sending in my FAFSA and CSS profile, stating my financial problems, then I will be considered for financial aid. Her income does not support me, unfortunately. I do not know the terms of their divorce (because none of my business???), but I live with her, while he sends me monthly checks to pay for, pretty much, everything, through child support. He also pays for my brother.

I am aware Medical School is costly, thanks for the reassurance.

Why do I not want to go to a school like UMich and MSU if I’m pre-med? Sorry if you don’t believe I should be reaching high for my dreams and aspirations.

You posted on another thread that your mother is a high income doctor and that she is refusing to pay anything for your college. You need to get your story straight and be honest when you fill out FAFSA and the CSS profile.

@ChessMaster7
You misunderstood me. The point wasn’t whether he’d get accepted. the point is that the successful premeds will likely be stronger than he is, and he’ll get weeded out.

This has NOTHING to do with wanting you to aspire to your dreams! This has to do with WANTING you to be successful
and not end up with Bs and Cs because your premed classmates are stronger. If your GPA is not high enough, along with your MCAT, you won’t get accepted to med school.

@bloxJacket

I said, “Wow,” because you have a very high income mom/stepdad, yet they won’t contribute a dime.

Of course the FA officers gave that lame answer. You will get “considered”. They’ll give you a $5500 loan and say that your parents have to pay the rest.
