University of Michigan or Michigan Tech University?

I'm trying to figure out which would be the better school to attend next year for Electrical and Computer Engineering (CpE). I am also interested with a minor in Technical Theater (maybe).

I've been accepted to both, and I really like the environment of both campuses. Michigan Tech is offering me $8,000 a year for their Leading Scholar program, but it is not that large of a determining factor of my decision.

Here are my thoughts so far:

Tech Pros: Small classes, small campus, free snowboarding, technical theater program, winter carnival and activities, not many classes taught by TAs, $8,000.

Tech Cons: Distance (10 hour drive one way), women, social life, would only know about 3 people, can I say distance again?.

UofM Pros: Distance (about 30 minutes), social life, would already know 50+ current students, Ann Arbor, plenty to do, respected name.

UofM Cons: Huge school, wouldn't know professors well, more classes taught by TAs, I don't know anything about the technical theater program, less $8,000.

Basically, it comes down to trading a social life and becoming socially isolated for 4 years or staying rather close to home while still receiving the college experience and maintaining my high school friendships.

What would you do?

Michigan>MTU. Winters are bad enough in Ann Arbor!

I don’t really mind the winter though. I’m more trying to think academically and socially. Michigan is where I’m leaning toward anyways, but I feel like I’m not giving MTU a fair chance. Can I really go wrong with Michgan?

TAs will not teach you, they will help professors who teach you with discussion groups and grading.

Also, even with its large student body, any student who takes the initiative can get to know the professors well.

If cost is not an issue, Michigan is a clear winner here.

Michigan by a lot. Much better academics plus the social scene is insanely better at Michigan.

Michigan over Michigan Tech.
You will not go wrong.

Well, Michigan seems to be unanimous here. Thanks for your help!

My name is Darius and I am a recent Michigan Tech graduate, from the Detroit Area (Bloomfield Hills).

Granted, Michigan Tech is a lot smaller than the University of Michigan but it is still one of the most prestigious engineering universities. During your first few semesters at Michigan Tech, you are going to be able to take engineering courses in the field that you will be studying in. Also, most classes are very hands-on, this is going to allow you to gain some real world experience.

I was in the same boat as you were in being far away from home and not knowing many people at Michigan Tech. With not knowing that many people at Tech, it gave me the opportunity to extend my social network and gain friendships from students that I may not have talked to if I went to a different school. By doing this I became very active on campus, this helped me increase my social life at Tech. The social life on campus was great, there was always something to do! Michigan Tech has over 200 student organizations on campus, many of them host events during the semester. I was heavily involved with different organizations on campus, this gave me the chance to meet more people both on and off campus. A few of things that I was involved in while I was at Michigan Tech were: Alpha Kappa Psi: Professional Business Fraternity, Society of African American Men, Campus Radio DJ, and a mentor for three years.
