University of Michigan School of Nursing

Hi my daughter wants to go to the nursing school next year- wondering about those of you who were accepted (or not) and your stats? She has a 4.2 gpa weighted and many nursing related volunteer hours. Her main concern is her ACT which now is a 28 but she is retaking.
Thanks for any info!

@Mimigirl I can’t help you, but it is meaningful, in general, to know the unweighted GPA as well. Are you out-of-state for UofM?

Yes OOS. unweighted is 3.72. Thank you!

Michigan uses only UW GPA. The GPA is on the lower side of the overall class, but also includes LSA, CoE, Ross, etc.

I’d speculate that Nursing would be on the lower side of those admission stats, since CoE and Ross will skew it higher. However, the 3.72 and 28 ACT would still be on the lower side of the 25/75 profile. Also, the stats of students on CC skew higher than the general UMich student population of applications.

FWIW, the average UW GPA and SAT/ACT scores of the 2/1, 3/1 and 3/29 RD waves this year were about 3.9 and between 1,475-1,500 SAT and a ACT of 32. Again, the average here on CC skews higher.

For the Class of 2022, the OOS acceptance rate was 19%. The Class of 2023 stats have not been released.

I was accepted to the nursing school this year with 3.88 UW GPA and 33 ACT

wow congrats! I hope she can get her ACT up- sounds very competitive.

@sushiritto you seem to know a lot about all of this- so do you know how much legacy actually helps? My daughter is a double legacy from parents and 3 grandparents who attended. I know it doesn’t help that ACT score but will it be considered enough to help a bit? As with everyone on this site its her first choice she’s just not a great test taker. Thank you for any insight.

@Mimigirl According to the CDS (Common Data Set), legacy is marked as “considered” at UMich, but not as “important.” Yes, it’s a boost, but I believe it’s not a huge bump.

For the Class of 2022, since this year’s stats aren’t available yet, the School of Nursing enrolled 136 students. Whereas, LSA enrolled 4,163 students. Rough and dirty, UMich might accept 2x the number they enroll for Nursing, probably a bit more for LSA. But that’s just a guess, since Nursing positions are obviously more limited.

@wmc656 's GPA and ACT score are right about the “sweet spot,” +/-, IMO, but that doesn’t mean lowerGPA’s and scores won’t be admitted. There are still essays, EC’s and that “legacy” thing too.

I haven’t see any breakout of just admissions stats for Nursing. Of course, I’m just speculating here. As I tell my '21, continue to work hard, so your best and we’ll submit an app and hope for the best.

@sushiritto thank you so much for your input. She will keep studying for the ACT- can’t do much about her GPA at this point. I’m just hoping that the nursing school takes a holistic approach which I hear they do.

My daughter was accepted this year early action to nursing school. She has 3.8 uw gpa (the was Michigan calculates) and a 1380 SAT superscored and 1370 highest one sitting score. She had a lot of volunteer work including working at our own charity in our neighborhood that benefits sick kids. She worked hard on the essays - Umich really wants to know it’s your top choice and why it’s your top choice. Visit, email admissions counselor with questions, email nursing presenters if you attend nursing admissions presentation. Your daughter definitely has a chance !!!

@runnergirl217 wow thank you that is amazing to hear! Is there a specific person you recommend we connect with? We did visit and meet with someone and my daughter did email her afterwards. And are you in state? I love to hear their review is holistic and not just based on stats. This is awesome to hear- she will feel much better knowing it is a possibility. And congrats to your daughter! go blue!

@sushiritto how does one calculate your gpa the way michigan does? Do they boost the gpa for honors and APs?

@Mimigirl UMich doesn’t boost your GPA (UW) for honors, IB or AP classes, but during their holistic review, they’ll review your transcripts for rigor/strength of classes and HS counselor comments/submissions. I’m sure they have some rubric for assigning extra points (and capping it) for honors, IB and AP classes.

@Mimigirl, the woman who did the admissions presentation for School of Nursing was Carrie Ceo. I think she is the recruitment director for nursing. We thanked her. My daughter brought up things she saw at the school of nursing in her essays and classes she was looking forward to taking. We are from New York out of state. My daughter only took the ACT once and got a 28 also. She stuck with the SAT. I know 2 kids who have got tutors and done practice tests and brought up 28’s to 32’s. I do think Umich doesn’t want just smarts they want kids that do lots of things. AT least that’s what I’ve read !! So they told us when we visitied that an All A’s whether they be A-, A+ etc is 4.0, B+, B- is 3.o and so on. They do not factor the ap’s into gpa but they obviously look at that. When my daughter was making her senior schedule I emailed the mich admissions counselor and the nursing person and asked for recommendations of what math class to take. I just think all that matters!! They want umich to be your first choice. :).

@runnergirl217 thank you that is so helpful. We are about to start tutoring so hopefully she will get a bit higher. Your advice is wonderful and I’m grateful for your time. It is def my daughters first choice- when we visited she just loved it. I hope your daughter has a wonderful experience and hopefully they will meet in a few years!

I also emailed the nursing admissions office asking for recommendations of what math to take and other meaningful questions to show that I was genuinely interested in nursing and dedicated to sticking to it. They really do care about directed interest in nursing and volunteering in clinical settings a lot so I think it’s helpful to have experience in that to include in your essays (I wrote my why michigan essay about volunteering at Michigan medicine and my community essay about volunteering). Also when I asked they said the average ACT was 30 and average SAT was 1350 in 2018 if that helps!! Good luck

@wmc656 thank you! Great to know and congrats. What science did you take senior year? My daughter is deciding between AP chem and AP physics. Do you think it matters?

@Mimigirl I took anatomy and physiology, psychology, and AP biology for science my senior year. I took AP chem my junior year and would say it is more relevant to nursing that physics, but I’m sure either one is perfectly fine.

I’m sure they’re both difficult and excellent classes to have on your college app. But by the time that you’re well into your senior year, you may really want the class that will be easiest for you to achieve the highest grade, with possibly the least amount of work, if there’s any discernable difference between the two classes.

You don’t want to be the author of one of those threads here on CC, where they start off by asking “Will I be rescinded…?”

@sushiritto and @wmc656 thank you!
