I've been accepted to the University of Michigan and New York University, as well as other schools.

I would love to go to NYU; however, logistically UofM makes the most amount of sense in terms of tuition and education.

I am in-state for Michigan and out of state for NYU, which is approximately a 20k difference. Furthermore, I want to ultimately go into medicine, which is somewhat more advantageous at UofM.

Ultimately, it's a matter of convincing my parents.

So please help me formulate some rebuttals and novel arguments.

Would you have to pay full cost at NYU? Because if you do, I can't see your parents budging... if you have some scholarships and stuff though, maybe it'd be ok?

Why would UM be better for premed? I was under the impression that it didn't really matter where you went as an undergrad, as long as you take the right classes and do really well on the MCATs. I don't think being undergrad at a school with a good med school helps you get into the med school (in fact, I've heard it actually works against you since the grad schools are looking for diversity)

That latter part (pre-med major) isn't really a worry. The worry is the cost.

I haven't received any scholarships. Furthermore, NYU is approximately 26k more per year in terms of tuition. My parents can easily afford the difference, but it's a matter of convincing them that it's worth spending the extra money.

better international focus, probably better facilities (since it's private), more opportunities to be a "well-rounded individual" which will help you in med school apps...?? I don't know, there's not much I can think of that's relevant to a premed student, sorry!

I totally understand the impulse though. At some point, you just want to leave the Midwest. I'm from Toledo, and I was picking between UM & NYU too. However, I wasn't in-state, so it was easier to convince my parents from a financial point of view.

Last year, I had to choose between an in-state university and NYU. And it about killed me when I realized I couldn't live with a five-figure debt hanging over me for the next 20 years. At the time, they were just numbers, and I understand it's hard to fully comprehend what "debt" really is. But it sucks. It really sucks. And I know the Midwest is predictable and boring, but college will fly by. It goes so fast, and you'll have fun wherever you go, even if it's nearby. New York will always be there. Save your money and go to UM. You'll have plenty of loans for medical school.

There really isn't an issue of debt. My parents, however, stress the matter of best value for the dollar in terms of education, as well as other aspects of life.

As such, it's a matter of convincing them that NYU is worth the extra money.

This is a close call in some ways. I got into both schools. I was accepted by UM's rolling admission before my ED NYU decision came. That of course ended the choice aspect. I did get to visit Ann Arbor and it is a great campus community. In that sense it is everything NYU is not. NYU's campus is NYC a very large and disjointed campus, but very much alive. NYC is the greatest city in so many ways. Michigan is a depressing area outside of Ann Arbor. The economy is depressed and the attitude of many I met seemed to mirror that feel. I would not want to go to college in such a negitive environment with little apparent econmic hope in the near future. NYC is alive. I love New Yorkers they know that it's a great city and they intend to keep it that way. NYC is NYU in my opinion and the opportunies are there, It's more of a feeling that I really want to go to college here. If you have THAT feeling your choice will be made much easier.--Best of luck!

Yeah Detroit's economy's going down the toilet....the only thing keeping it alive might be Ford and GM execs and possibly Northwest Airlines (althought NWA has a hub in Detroit it's not the HQ-that's Minneapolis.)

I used to live in the Sterling Heights area. It's so suburbanized and repetitive and snobby and annoying. I hate when we go to visit relatives. x_x; I would choose NYU, but with the cost, it's a tossup. Your parents ultimately have the choice because they are paying, unless you want big loans.. I got lucky with NYU aid, though.

You could always be like "well, I'm going to hate UM and want to transfer out within a year anyway - wouldn't it be better to go somewhere I liked and be sure that I'd be at a good school all 4 years?"

My roommate hates hates hates Stern (though for reasons that don't really have to do with Stern), and being miserable attending a college you don't like is just totally not worth it. You can tell them that you're less likely to have a breakdown and drop out of school this way...? XD
