I have a tough decision to make and I just wanted a little input from impartial people. I have been accepted into UofM's Psychology program in LSA and NYU's Applied Psychology program in Steinhardt.

I know that U of M's program is stronger. Also I am a Michigan Resident, so attending the school is half the cost, but NYU has been my dream for the last couple of years.

So I know pretty much I should go to U of M because it's an awesome opportunity. I want to be an Industrial/Organizational Psychologist, and I plan on going to grad school.

My Questions are:
which school will offer me the best education?
which school will offer the best opportunity at grad school?

You seem to have already answered your own questions. You acknowledge that Michigan’s program is stronger (in psychology, Michigan is clearly superior). On the merits, I don’t think this is a particularly close call.

Though I can’t speak to the quality of NYU’s program, as a freshman, I spend nearly 3 days in East Hall (the psych building) per week and am currently conducting research in the psych dept. My experience here has been absolutely incredible. I assume at some point you will want to do research. The possibilities here to assist with research (through UROP) or start your own work with a prof. supervising are infinite. I took an upper-level psych course last semester and thought the instruction was very, very solid and the GSIs really know their stuff. Personally, I’d find it hard to beat UMich’s psych dept.

But Michigan’s psych department is SIGNIFICANTLY better. I mean it’s in the top 2-3 in the nation. You have your whole life to live in New York.

Its not so much the Psych department graduate strength as the fact that you would incur far too much debt if you went to NYU. Maybe you can go to graduate school in NYU after doing your undergraduate work in Michigan.

What would your opinions be if someone’s choice was between Michigan out of state and NYU (for psych)? I imagine Michigan, still, would be the better choice in terms of academics and cost. Thoughts?

If the costs were the same, and the family could afford the costs, I think it’s a matter of taste. If you’re spending that much, you might as well get the college experience you want.

I strongly agree with Hanna. Going to NYU will not close any doors to the top Pyschology graduate schools in the U.S. It will be your research experience, grades, and recommendations that will matter so might as well go to a college that you genuinely think you would excel and thrive in.

Of course, if neither is affordable, the student should be looking at schools which will not leave him/her with a huge debt burden after graduating.
