University of Michigan vs. NYU

the criteria of this list is what is pulling to be a wolverine
. you must consider more than academics, for me academics come first, but what do academics matter if your not happy. consider the three things this list takes into account and try and compare your two choices

the thing is, both are academically comparable, I’d definitely give the edge to Michigan for graduate programs but as an undergrad, I’d say they’re the same. I just toured Mich and the guide said she had to decide between Cornell and Mich, after visiting Cornell she was horrified at the lack of school spirit, friendliess of the student body, and overall atmosphere. I don’t attend, yet, but I believe the atmosphere at Mich will be absolutely uncomparable. Your success, happiness, and grades will be highly influenced by your enjoyment of the school you go to and I believe Michigan provides such an atmosphere that other top schools can’t compete with. Also, go visit each! Then you’ll know if you fit in and maybe Ill see you next year as a wolverine.

Academically, I would give NYU the slight edge. While DukeDevil1170 is right about grad school, but NYU undergrad is better than UMich, since state schools are usually less selective for undergrad due to state mandates.

College life is definitely better at UMich. Sports and spirit is big at UMich. NYU has a commuter school feel. For me, making friends in college is equally as important as academics, especially for undergrad. Grad school is where you hone your academic acumen.

I think cost would be comparable if you commute to NYU versus OOS for UMich, where you have to pay for room and board.

So at the end of the day, it’s whether you value academic more or college life more.

“Academically, I would give NYU the slight edge. While DukeDevil1170 is right about grad school, but NYU undergrad is better than UMich, since state schools are usually less selective for undergrad due to state mandates.”

Nonsense. Michigan is academically superior to NYU in a vast majority of comparable departments. NYU is not a typical private school. It has over 42,000 students and is even larger than U-M.

Could you please tell us how NYU is more selective than Michigan?

USNWR selectivity index: Michigan 24; NYU 35

because michigan has a 51% acceptance rate perhaps? and SAT averages are basically equal

people from my OOS school easily get into Michigan… and they are not extremely bright to say the least…

I assume by 51% you mean 42%, right?

Tough choice. What’s more important to you-having the typical college experience in a beautiful town like Anne Arbor with sports and the like, or going to school in a huge city like NYC? Both schools are completely different…

“Could you please tell us how NYU is more selective than Michigan?”

Data on the Class of 2013.

Michigan
ACT Middle 50%: 27 - 31 (i.e., 1220-1380)
% Submitting Score: 80% (n.b., only 36% of applicants submit SAT scores.)
Students in Top Tenth of HS Class: 92%
Students in Top Quarter of HS Class: 99%
Acceptance Rate: 50.0%

NYU
Critical Reading Middle 50%: 610 - 710
Math Middle 50%: 600 - 720
(i.e., 1210-1430)
% Submitting Score: 87% (n.b., only 13% of applicants submit ACT scores)
Students in Top Tenth of HS Class: 64%
Students in Top Quarter of HS Class: 92%
Acceptance Rate: 37.8% (wow, for the Class of 2012, it was ~25%)

It’s foolish to compare the SAT ranges of Michigan and NYU because few applicants submit SAT scores to Michigan. Most applicants to Michigan submit the ACT, and the ACT provides a concordance chart to convert ACT scores to SAT scores. Apples to apples.

It really depends on what your looking for in a school OP. If you just want to go by overall academic reputation, then choose Michigan. If you are interested in a certain field such as theater, maybe NYU would be the choice for you. You need to tell us more information about what you are looking for, so that we can advise you properly.

"people from my OOS school easily get into Michigan… and they are not extremely bright to say the least… "

I assume you attend a private school?

Both Michigan and NYU are notoriously stingy with financial aid. All things being equal, choose the cheaper alternative.
