<p>Read the thread. There is no way to make up that difference in cost. They are comparable schools.</p>
<p>Regarding chemistry in particular, Berkeley’s program is much stronger than Michigan.
However, is it strong enough to warrant paying a huge premium? Probably not for an undergrad degree and if you have to take out large student loans to attend.</p>

Another reason to consider - my D2 also had a similar choice to make - UCB vs UMich (vs GTech) for ChemE, all OOS. The main reason we dropped UCB was that we found out that it is rather difficult to change from COC to COE. Interestingly enough, this is what happened - she moved from ChemE to MechE in the 3rd sem at GTech, very easy process.
