University of Michigan Vs. University of Maryland

I graduated with a degree in Astronomy from the University of Maryland College Park and would not agree with the above comment that Michigan is superior to Maryland in every way. Michigan and Maryland have similar rankings in Physics and in Astronomy Maryland is clearly superior.

“The difference is ~ 30 K/year. He would like to go into Medicine. Is a degree from UM worth the money?”

No.

To the posters whom are just saying “No” to the “Is Michigan worth it?” question - Can I ask what data you are basing that opinion on? Have you visited Ann Arbor, spoken with the professors? Tracked where our graduates get accepted to medical school?

I too had my heart set on U of Mich and when I got in it was literally one of the happiest days of my life. I had a wonderful 4 years there and then stayed on to work for the school after graduation. I am active in the U Mich club in my area, and attend regular get togethers of alums. I personally know scores of people who went on to Medical School and were very happy with the preparation and instruction that they received at U Mich.

Do I think someone whom attends U of Maryland will be woefully unprepared for Medical school. Absolutely not. Do I think that someone whom attends the University of Michigan (pre-med) will be ~better~ prepared. Absolutely. Michigan is doing some ground-breaking research (on a number of fronts) and I can’t imagine how exciting it would be to have an interest in medicine and be on a campus that is championing new discoveries all of the time.

Plus, I firmly, firmly believe that you only get to do your undergraduate studies once. That’s it. Why not do them in the place that you feel is right for you?

Lauren, the point most posters are making on this thread is that for this particular kid, with this particular career path, the in state school is a better choice. Most of us would tell a pre-med student not to spend an extra $120,000 dollars on an undergraduate degree if there is a cheaper, similar option. If he was instate for Michigan tuition, most of us would recommend that he go to Michigan.

My D went to UM for a degree in Medicine. The fact that she graduated from UM got her into several hospitals on that basis alone. She had her choice of several places for her residency. The degree from UM opened a lot of doors for her.
