University of Michigan

What are the best and worst attributes of the U of M?

Worst: OOS tuition, weather.
Best: One of top 3 public schools, smart kids, Ann Arbor.

Worst:
1) Financial Aid for Out of State applicants
2) Advising
3) Intro-level classes can be large
4) Dorm food

Best:
1) Academics (top ranked departments accross the academic spectrum)
2) School spirit
3) Ann Arbor
4) Friendly students
5) Rabidly loyal alums

in my opinion,

worst:
it's public
it's big
the campus is spread out and you have to take buses to get around

best:
good reputation
great business school
it's fun
people who graduate from there always love it

^ what's wrong with public? when you mention "good reputation", "great business school", "it's fun"...why does it matter that it's public?

Actually elsifjdl, Michigan is not that spreadout. Students walk to class. The bus is used by Engineering, Architecture and Music students who live in Central Campus or Arts and Science and Business majors who live in North Campus. However, most students get around on foot.

Also, with a $7.2 billion endowment, a very wealhy student body, 1,500 (6%) undergraduate international students and 7,500 (30%) undergraduate out of state students, top 10 programs in Business, Engineering, Law and Medicine and one of the wealthiest and most loyal alumni networks, Michigan cannot be classified simply as "public" or "private". It is quite possibly the most complex university in the US.

less spending per student, there are many "in state" kids who are not as academically sharp as you would have if it were private because the state must give them preferential admissions, and in my experience, the accessibility of university services is both lower and more bureaucratic than at a comparable private school

michigan carries much of the post-graduation cache of elite private schools, however, for me, the cons would be in the actual experience at the school for the reasons i listed.
