University of Minnesota College of Design

I am a senior in high school applying to college and I hope to go to the University of Minnesota next fall. I want to go into architecture which would fall under the college of design. What are my chances of getting in?

I have:

27 act
3.78 gpa
9 honors/ap classes through high school
varsity football
varsity lacrosse
principals advisory board
other leadership roles in my high school

I am also an Illinois resident and I am 100% Hispanic.

@asilvs6 does your school do class rank? Also, here’s a link to give you a good idea where you fall academics wise.

You seem based on your stats to have a good chance of getting accepted. I’m sure others will post on this forum as well to give some tips. Good luck!

Unfortunately my school does not offer a class rank but thanks for you input. Also do you any knowledge of in-state tuition and how I may acquire that if I get in and enroll there after a year or so?

@asilv6 here is the information you need - see link. In summary, if you move to MN in order to attend a post-secondary institution (ie UMN or another state college) you will be charged OOS tuition for the entire 4 years.

Regarding College of Design, your ACT seems fine. Is the GPA weighted or unweighted? For architecture, you enter as a pre-major and apply to architecture for sophomore year. A couple of different degree options:

Bachelor of Science http://arch.design.umn.edu/programs/bs/admissions.html

Bachelor of Design-Arch http://arch.design.umn.edu/programs/bda/admissions.html

Assuming your goal is the M.Arch and professional practice, each degree option above will help you achieve that. Read the descriptions carefully because, depending on which one you choose and how you do, you would be eligible to accelerate your Master’s training.

Good luck to you!

@asilvs6 My school didn’t offer my rank either, although I can probably get a good guess of my percentile I fall into. In-state tuition, however, is somewhere in the range of $14,400 and out of state is around $26,600. There are many links online that will give you a good idea of cost.

@JBStillFlying That is my weighted GPA

@asilv6 do you know your unweighted? You can probably just estimate or calculate. It’s reasonable to think that UMN is looking at uw GPA, since schools all have different weighting methodologies.

Many schools don’t provide a rank (my kids’ school included) and the admissions committee takes that into account. You don’t get penalized for not having a class rank. They’ll just look very closely at GPA.

Having a College of Design student myself I would ask yourself if spending out of state tuition for a college is the best choice for Architecture. You have some great schools in Illinois known for Architecture, one of which is Univ. of IL - Urbana Champagne. My daughter was originally planning on Architecture and then found out about the Product Design program and switched right away before starting. Her goals were very similar for both and in hindsight is glad she made the decision she did seeing her roommate spend tons of late nights at the studio putting together projects.

Also, As a professional who works with a lot of architecture majors who had troubles finding architecture jobs and now work in construction, I’d also tell you to make sure it is what you are looking for, not just because you are good at drawing and are somewhat technical but not like engineering technical (that’s my daughter, lol) if you know what I mean. Hard to put that in words, but it’s so hard to choose majors as a high school student.

The u’s architecture program is great so don’t think I’m trying to discourage you but based on your stats I would say you are borderline getting in as the architecture students tend to be higher in the stats for the college of design. Know that there are a lot of options that might fit your needs.
