University of Minnesota Postponed!

My application was postponed at the University of Minnesota-Twin Cities. My GPA is 3.48 and my ACT is a 23. I've only taken the ACT once and I wanted to take it again but all of the days interfered with activities I was involved in. I have taken honors, AP classes, and several college courses already. In addition, I have a massive load of extra-cirriculars including theatre where I have been involved in 22 plays, I am currently doing two touring shows and soon performing in another mainstage production, Speech Team-I have been an All-State Performer every year, Choir-I serve as President and am involved in Show, Chamber, and Madrigal Choir, Student Government-I serve as Secretary and do volunteer work with them, and I was involved in Student Newspaper for three years-I served as Editor-in-Chief last year and occasionally I write articles for the paper this year. I applied to the U of M's College of Liberal Arts and want to to major in either theatre or psychology. I was wondering what my chances are of getting in after being postponed.

A postponement of consideration is not a rejection, so you still have a chance. Is there any chance you can still increase your ACT score?

Can you take the SAT in March? You need to get your priorities in order and find time to improve your test scores. A 23 is not great for the U

tokenadult, do you think taking some CLEP exams would be beneficial?

That 23 ACT would put you in the bottom quartile at Minnesota and while your 3.48 GPA is pretty good it’s definitely below their median of 3.6—in a year when applications there are reportedly up 15%. There’s still a chance you’ll be accepted; much will probably depend on what kind of yield they get from offers they make to higher-stat kids in that larger applicant pool. But I agree with tokenadult, it might help your chances if you can get your ACT up a little, say to a 25 or higher, or alternatively get a comparably higher score on the SAT (> 1150 CR + M). Some students do better on the SAT than the ACT.

With a 23 on the ACT, it’s going to be VERY hard to get in. Granted everything depends on the yield, but I have friends who have higher stats and are still postponed…

how did you get a 23 on the ACT?

My other scores were good but my math scores brought me down and I was feeling horrible that day, I’m kinda one of those people who blank under lots of pressure. I’m going to look at dates for ACT/SATs. I was going to take them again but many things got in the way like All-State Choir, Speech, and other college auditions.

I could take the SAT in March.

ALEKS

might help you with your math. You can do a free trial and give yourself a test in algebra.

Ugh I hated ALEKS. I had to do it for Dual Enrollment Algebra 3.

Even though your ec’s are impressive, the main thing that hurts you is your ACT. And your GPA is slightly low. I’m not going to lie, it will be hard, especially with how competitive the U has gotten this year.

I don’t think there is really anything you can do at this point, as the next ACT is in April, except maybe write a letter explaining how badly you want to go there? Even that won’t help much at all though. Or like you said, if they take March scores, maybe take the SAT.

And like tokenadult said, you’re postponed, not rejected. So just keep your head up and hope for the best! Good luck!

Thanks! I need luck.
