Does the University of Minnesota Twin Cities have a reputable architecture program? What about the design school itself? What programs does it compare to? Is it worth paying out of state tuition for?

I read somewhere that U of M's architecture program is a "hidden gem". Thoughts?

Just trying to figure out where I'm going to school next year. Thanks!

My motto is try to get through college with minimal debt, i don’t know anything about that program though.

I don’t have any specific input on the reputation of Minnesota’s architecture department, but you should be aware that they only offer the bachelor of design and the bachelor of science. These are different from the bachelor of architecture (B.Arch). With the BDA or BS you’d still need to get an M.Arch in order to practice architecture. In that case, going out of state for your undergraduate may not be worth it.

There are many different degrees and degree combinations that lead to a career in architecture. The B.Arch tends to be the fastest and least expensive, but is architecture-intensive. The BA or BS plus M.Arch takes longer and therefore costs more, but offers more academic flexibility. Other factors such as financial aid, work-study programs, and the overarching design focus of the individual programs will also impact your decision.

Just curious, what’s “in state” for you?
