  • ECs: Science Olympiad (2years) Soccer (3years), robotics(1 year) NHS(2years) My schools honor society (4years) Link Ambassadors (1year)
Essays: I’m not sure how my teachers were since I couldn’t read them, but I had them both for 2 consecutive years and one was my soccer coach and the other my club coach so they got to know me outside of class which helps. They were also teaching classes that were key to my major of choice. My essays were average. Although, my essay about why I chose my major I felt was strong.

Hope this helps!

For my son:

State if you applied EA or RD: EA

State when you applied and when you heard back: Applied in early August, heard back in late Sept.

State major applied for and major accepted to: Applied only to CLA. UMN accepts to college, not to specific major. Accepted to CLA.

State state of residency: MN

State sat or act score: 1530 SAT (790 EBRW/740 M)

State unweighted gpa: 3.94 calculated (school doesn’t provide uw but it’s easy to calculate)

State amount of APs taken: 3 in Jr. year (APUSH, Lang/Comp, Chem). 5 in Sr. year (AB, Physics 1, Euro, Lit/Comp, Gov)

State significant extracurriculars: Musician in area elite ensembles, Eagle Scout, Quiz Bowl team (just qualified for Nationals!)

State quality of essays and letters of rec: No letters of rec. as these aren’t required. He did the optional diversity essay which seemed decent enough. He also had a great reason for his majors of choice. He’s a brainy kid and wants to pursue his subjects at a pretty deep level. Most likely won’t attend UMN if he’s not offered Honors and the chance to do a thesis.

  • 2 LORs, no idea on quality since common app does not allow applicants to view LORs
@JBStillFlying Congrats on your son’s team for qualifying for nationals! My team is hoping to get 2 teams to nationals this year!
Happily surprised I got in with the stats I had and will probably be attending the U next fall.

EA

Damn nice essays

@w00pw00p you applied EA or RD? Some RD decisions have come out well before the March deadline.

This is for my kid …

EA
Application complete: 10/12 (after a couple weeks of glitches, we thought it was done by about 9-20)
Accepted: 10/20
Major: Applied to CLA. Auditioning school of music. Considering double degree TBD.
In state - Minnesota
ACT: 34
UW GPA: 4.0
State amount of APs taken: 2 AP classes, no test. Currently carrying a 4.0 3 semesters into PSEO. Should graduate with 30+ credits.
Pointy music and theater resume. advanced pianist of many years, voice, youth to regional theater resume.

Essays - meh, hard to say. Good enough. Did submit common app essay.

Letter of rec - Excellent from a PSEO prof. School of music required 2 recs - also excellent.

Also accepted to honors and received merit scholarship.

Not committed to the U of MN yet, but it’s a strong contender and crossing fingers on music auditions. Auditioned music programs are just ridiculously competitive across the boards. It’s not out of the question that he would do a BA program there either.

EA

for my daughter …
-Don’t know if it was EA or RD
-Applied in late October. Accepted on Thanksgiving morning.
-Applied and accepted to CLA
-From: Minnesota
-SAT: 1400
-UW GPA: 3.6
-2 APs each junior and senior year and 2-3 honors each year. (5s on both the junior year ones).
-ECs: State champion mock trial, nationals runner up, plus other/individual awards. Many theater lead roles and school awards. Choir and solo awards. Works summers and volunteers.
-She didn’t use common app so I don’t think recs were submitted. She did do the short answers.

We’re local and the kids we know there (a bunch) seem to love the vibe, quality of teaching, opportunities etc. … and the value $$$. Several choose Honors there over more “prestigious” schools and have nothing but good things to say. She’s waiting on some LACs but would be happy to be here.

-RD
-Applied 1-1, accepted 1-25
-Applied & accepted to Carlson
-Residency: Washington
-SAT: 1470
-Unweighted GPA: 3.78
-AP: finishing with 6 APs and 10 Running Start (dual enrollment) classes
-EC: Varsity swim 3 years, Lion Dance 3 years, Key Club 4 years
-No essays/recs but I did do the short answer questions.

Is there an on-line option to decline an acceptance from UMNTC? I received a $10k scholarship via snail mail this week from UMN but have a much better offer from another school. I want to make sure the scholarship goes back into their pool to give to someone else.

@T20hopeful2023 - not an easily findable one! you are best-off calling or e-mailing them. Don’t bother with anyting via snail mail because they will continue to send you reminders to accept for weeks after you send one of those postcards in.

They are closed today due to the extreme cold but will hopefully open tomorrow.

@T20hopeful2023 seconding to call. They reopened today and I called with a question about financial aid. And thanks for thinking to do this!

W: 3.977, don’t know uw

Not entirely committed to UMN yet, but I think I’m going there, so:
-RD
-Applied late December, heard back March 1
-College of Design
-Wisconsin
-30 ACT
-3.1 GPA
-APs Taken: 5 (APUSH, AP Art, AP Euro, APLAC, Calc AB, AP Physics)
-Significant ECs: Forensics, GSA, Change of Mind (mental health awareness club), Model UN, DECA
-Both my teachers wrote me wonderful letters of recommendation (as they are English teachers), and I believe my essay was a big part of what helped me get in because I believe my topic was pretty unique.

EA
Applied sometime in September, heard back sometime in October
Accepted college of biological sciences (neuroscience)
Tennessee
ACT - 34C
3.9 UW/4.3 Weighted
APs Taken: 5 (AP Human, AP Bio, APUSH, AP Chem, AP Lang) + 3 dual enrollment college courses (English Comp, Stats, Sociology)
ECs: Girl Scouts (gold award recipient), 4H horse club hippology and horsebowl (my team was ranked 4th in the nation), National Art Honors Society, over 1000 hours of community service in high school
Wrote the diversity essay which my English professor thought was very strong, but no other essays, not sure if my school sent recommendations since they weren’t required, if so I had two of my AP teachers write recs.

Waiting on financial aid info before I can make a decision…
