BUMP
Although Iâm a little late to the party, I will chance you anywayâŠ
UMinn-TC CLA: Low match
Henri, you are an amazing student, and there is no doubt in my mind that you will be admitted to your dream school. Great job dude!!! Once again you are a phenominal student
Thank you! @evanm137â that means a lot. I checked the application tracker and it says âYour application is being very carefully consideredâ. I will be hearing a decision in the near future and hopefully itâs an acceptance letter!!
We both hope it is!!!
I got accepted!!!
I didnât get into CBS I got into Liberal Arts but Iâm still happy!
@swanny1210â - decades ago when I went to the U, I started in CLA and transferred to CBS and it was no big deal. As long as youâre looking ahead and know all of the classes you need to take to fulfill requirements, it should be a relatively easy switch to make. I donât know if things have changed much, but I started with some biology BA majors in CLA but I wanted to get a BS, so I switched to CBS (one of the pros for me was no second year of language required). Iâd say get with an advisor early in your college career and plan your path. Youâll do great! Ski-u-Mah!
Congrats dude!!! I knew you would. You have a great future ahead. Hopefully I will end up joining you there!
@MinneMom2â How did you go about doing that? Iâm going to give the admissions office a call and talk to them about how I would schedule classes so I would be a competitive transfer. Do you have to wait until your sophomore year or can you transfer after one semester?
Thank you! @evanm137â have you heard from Madison?
@swanny1210â - I was class of '90, so Iâm sure there have been some changes in the years since I transferred. But from what I recall, there were just a few forms to fill out. I actually started college as a music major and then switched to biology (at the end of my soph year), so I had several classes that ended up being âunnecessaryâ in the long run - but with the general requirements to take so many arts credits, so many English/composition credits, etc., my first year and half were spent in classes I would have taken anyway, regardless of major. Unless things are really different than they were when I was there, transfers between colleges happen every term for many students. It canât hurt to give admissions a call. I guess my point is - itâs awesome that youâre accepted to the U. Youâre in! You can deal with switching to your preferred college once youâre on campus. Do you have a major in mind?
@swanny1210â Nope, and Im getting very impatient about it! Its been about 2 1/2 months now
@MinneMom2â I would like to major in Genetics, Cell Development, or Neuroscience. I will definitely give them a call. What did you major in when you went to CBS?
@swanny1210â - straight bio, but I did take some awesome 5000-level genetics classes and toyed for awhile with going more specifically into GCB. My minor was child development and I was going to do an honors research project that looked at genetic underpinnings of antisocial behavior in children, but the lead researcher (at U of Mich) unfortunately passed away just before we were to start. I was too far along in the program to try and pull together a new project and still graduate on time, but so much has been done since then in the field of neuroscience and the biology of behavior. Certainly exciting times to be in that area of study. Anyhow, I looked back at my transcript and saw that I transferred from CLA to CBS between winter and spring quarters (we were on qtrs back in the day), so at least back then you could switch at any time.
Iâm on the fence about whether I should go to the University of Minnesota CLA and then hopefully transfer into CBS or go to Iowa State and take their Pre-Med track. Iâm a good student so I think I would have strong grades to transfer into CBS but their is no guarantee plus they receive a lot of transfer applications. I donât want to be stuck in Liberal Arts but I also want to attend the U. Any advice?
@MinneMom2â
@swanny1210â - oooh, that goes beyond my personal experience and ability to advise. Sorry.
In your OP it was clear how much you love the U - I wouldnât give up on that yet. Do call and explain your concerns and see if anyone can give more sound advice. Of course, they wonât guarantee anything, but they may have better counseling as to how to make that transition successfully. Meanwhile, it never hurts to have a few other school options to consider, if itâs not too late to submit your application to ISU.
Also, the campuses have a very different vibe. Would you be equally happy living in Ames for 4 years as you would the Cities?
I say give the U a call, but first check out this link on their web site: http://onestop.umn.edu/degree_planning/changing_college_or_major/index.html
It might answer some of your questions.
@swanny1210â , Congratulations on being accepted to the U of M! I understand your concerns about transferring into CBS. There are no guarantees, but my wife works with several students who were able to transfer into CBS in their sophomore and junior years. None reported any difficulty, and all were decent students.
If this is a strong goal for you, I recommend reviewing this page:
http://www.cbs.umn.edu/learn/undergraduates/current-students/academic-advising/transfer-within-u
Planning your coursework accordingly, get strong grades. Personal opinion- the Chem and Bio 2xxx classes are intentionally challenging. They want to filter out the weakest students early in the studentâs college program. Strong grades there will read well.
Meet with your academic adviser early. You are not the first student to want to transfer from CLA to CBS, and theyâll be able to best help you plan your curriculum accordingly.
SKI-U-MAH!
Thank you for the post @khidhalaâ it helps a lot. Do you by any chance know which academic advisor they used and are advisors assigned to each college? Sorry Iâm asking you all of this Iâm going to drive down to the U this weekend and figure all this out because its only 20 minutes away.
