University of Minnesota- Twin Cities

I was just curious in knowing how many internationals consider University of Minnesota- Twin Cities, given its: education quality, value, location etc.... Is UM-TC usually a school on a internation list? Questioning what are the popular schools usually on a international students list besides HSPY.

I think not enough international students are considering top public universities below Berkeley.

You see, there are two groups of international students: students with money and students without. Students who rely on financial aid package cannot afford to attend public universities. Students with lots of money prefer to invest into universities with international name recognition: Ivies, MIT, Stanford, Berkeley, whatnot. Unfortunately even NYU seems to have more international name recognition than the University of Minnesota at Twin Cities.

That leaves a relatively small applicant pool for schools like UM-TC: students who have a fair amount of money for college but are still sensitive to the tuition bill. A $15,000 tuition bill is quite high in an international context, considering that higher education is free in many countries. Few international students have a $100,000 college fund set aside for their education or can easily convince their parents to make that investment. The ones who do often have enough money that they could spend twice as much and go to a more expensive private university.

I got the impression that many international students at public universities are students who already lived in the States before college. Their parents might be here on a work visa (or undocumented immigrants…) and they have lived in this country for so long that staying for college is the most sensible option. If money is an issue (but they do have some money to pay for college), attending the public in-state school is often the best option.
