My daughter is seriously looking at the University of Missouri J school for advertising/ strategic communications. She has a 30 ACT and 3.7 from a private college prep HS in Kansas City. We live on the Kansas side, so she would be OOS. She would qualify for automatic $10k merit and direct admit to J school and possibly Honors College.
Here are her questions-
Does anyone know the potential for additional $ from the J school scholarship pool and how competitive is it?
She really wants to go further from home but can’t justify passing up this program and the value. The presentation at the j school stated 68% of the J school students are OOS. Is it an interesting environment? She was very impressed with the j school presentation and tour. Is it that good?
Any current Mizzou J school students out there- can you share your experience/thoughts? @CE527M ?
Not a current student but a J grad … with an OOS senior also strongly considering going there for the reasons you list above. I know more about the editorial side of it things than advertising, but, yeah it’s very good.
Since most kids aren’t even admitted to J until junior year, I don’t know about additional $ from J school as a freshman – although there is a way to apply for additional merit through for Mizzou (deadline Dec. 15). I can look for link later if you don’t find it in scholarship area. I did receive some smallish additional $ once I was a junior/senior and doing well in the program.
And 90% of the kids I knew were OOS.
You almost can’t beat the network the Missouri Mafia provides after graduation either – at least on the news side of things.
@Midwestmomto2 thank you for the info. From what I can gather, the freshmen that are direct admits to J school (29ACT or higher) also compete for a scholarship from the J school beginning freshman year. This would be in addition to the mark twain nonresident scholarship. I think the pool of additional money is $200k. But I’m not sure what stats you need to receive additional money.
With you as an alum, your son/daughter might be elegible for the herritage nonresident scholarship. I’m a KU J school grad so I’m out of luck there!
Are you currently working in news in the Midwest? I have heard that the Mizzou connections /opportunities are outstanding !
If your daughter is a direct admit to the J-school (and with her score/GPA looks like she is), then she can apply for journalism scholarships (will be automatically considered with Mizzou’s scholarship application). There isn’t a ton of money for freshman, but there are some opportunities. It is competitive. I didn’t receive a journalism scholarship myself. There are also other grants and general scholarships freshmen can get. I received an $1,200 grant and $800 scholarship.
As an out of state student, I know the pain of paying OOS freight. However, a big reason I decided on Mizzou was that Missouri is one of the few states where it’s easy (and even encouraged) to become a resident. Your daughter would have to stay in Missouri the summer after freshman year, work (I’m also planning on taking a few classes to get ahead while I’m there), and register to vote/get a MO driver’s license. More info here. It will take a little bit of work on her end, but compared to most other states, it’s really simple and she’ll end up with in-state tuition the following years which really helps cut down on the costs.
Definitely. I’m only in my first semester, but already I’m just so blown away by the professors, their dedication, the classes, etc. She definitely won’t be alone in being an OOS student; every time I say I’m from Virginia, people go, “Oh, you’re probably here for journalism, huh?” The journalism school is definitely known and everyone knows how it’s a big draw for OOS students. There are so many interest areas (30+) and out of all the schools I looked at, none had as many opportunities as Mizzou did. They also have a large journalism study abroad program as well as many journalism organizations to get involved with.
Also–there are a ton of students from Kansas here and they all agree that it’s far enough away from home but not too far that they can’t go home if they want to. I have to wait till Thanksgiving to go home, meanwhile a lot of Kansas kids I know are planning on going home for Labor Day. So have her consider if she really wants to go that far away. I know at first I was thinking I’d love to be so far away from home, and I do, but at the same time, it would be really nice to have the option to go home too.
Hope that helps. If I can answer any other questions, just let me know!
