University of Missouri Journalism vs. Penn State Journalism

I'm a high school senior (guy), and I've recently been admitted to the University of Missouri as well as Penn State Erie (no I didn't get into University Park). Note, I'm a resident of California so both of those schools are considered out-of-state.

I've applied and plan to study as a journalism major because my goal is to become a sports journalist. I'm also interested in potentially double majoring/minor in some business or marketing related field (safety net).

According to my understanding, Mizzou is the better journalism school while PSU is the better all-around school while it also has a specific sports journalism program (John Curley Center for Sports Journalism). Of course, feel free to correct me if I'm wrong.

I would really appreciate it if I could have some insight on which university you believe I should choose of the two. Please consider all factors and evaluate all aspects.

Thank you

Also, please let me know if there are any other facts you need to know about me and my preferences in order to give your opinion.

I would also add The University of Iowa to your list.

As for journalism, I often hear great reviews about Missouri but little about Penn State. I am sure Oenn State has a great journalism program, I think you should also consider the two schools ( three if adding Iowa) locations etc…

Coolbreezze,

Thanks for your input.

University of Iowa? I was never considering applying there, but I’ll certainly look into it as long as the application deadline hasn’t passed yet. As I can see, you attend there.

Anything you can tell me about the program from possible experience?

I have applied to a few more schools (Oregon, Indiana, Ohio, Michigan State), but haven’t gotten my admissions results back yet. As of now, however, I’m deciding between Mizzou and Penn which were initially my top two choices.

I know that Mizzou is supposed to be amazing for journalism. I haven’t heard much about PSU, but that could easily be my own ignorance more than anything. I would definitely second the recommendation to apply to the University of Iowa, though. It’s a really great school – I’d at least look into it and see whether it would fit your interests!

University of Iowa has the best English and writing program, along with one of the best journalism programs which is closely related to their world renown writing program.

Oregon, Indiana, Ohio, and Michigan State ( live near MSU) are all good schools but not of the same caliber for journalism as is Missouri and Iowa.

Rachelmk,

Yes, Missouri is supposed to be amazing. However, I question whether or not it would provide me an all-around education. You know what I mean? I think Penn State is better in that sense.

And yes, I think I’ll definitely look into Iowa.

Any other university suggestions?

Coolbreezze,

Interestingly enough, I haven’t seen University of Iowa on any of the google searches or extensive research I’ve done on the top journalism programs. Mind showing me any links?
