University Of Nevada, Reno?

Is this a good college? I am talking about it academically. I read some of the reviews and people students there like it. However, I searched on googles and many people are complaining that the school sucks and stuff. Can someone give me some details about how the campus is?House?Campus?Cost?
I am from California and the university is only a few hours a away from me. Do I have to pay the out-of-state tuition?

Yes, you have to pay out of state tuition if you’re not a resident of Nevada. It’s an okay state school, but a party school as well. You have much better options in the public schools in California to be honest.

UN-R has offered the WUE tuition discount in the past to CA residents. You should check with the school to see if they will be offering it next year and any conditions that apply.

Since you are fairly close to campus I suggest you visit and see what you think. They give a pretty extensive two hour tour. I thought the campus was nice-ish, it’s close to downtown which you may see as a pro or a con. Yes, there are a lot of good alternatives in CA, but UN-R could still be a solid addition to your list depending on what you are looking for.

UNR is on the WUE, so CA residents who qualify pay 150% of in-state tuition (which is much less than regular out of state tution). Read the fine print of the WUE rules, as it varies by school and major.

In-state tuition is ~ $6K at UNR, so that’s $9K with the WUE.

My buddy (from So Cal) just sent his daughter there. It’s a perfect fit for her, as the family is big into winter sports.

Academically, UNR is roughly above Cal State San Marcos and below Cal State Long Beach.
The Nevada universities really don’t have a very good reputation, except for hospitality management at LV. Even the honors program is pretty bad.

The Nevada publics are the worst in the nation.

A few neighbor kids go there and LOVE it. In at least 2 of the cases, the kids applied very late after being rejected from a bunch of CA schools. I know a few alum, they are normal people, hold regular jobs, etc. Weather and culture are quite different than most of CA. Academically, they aren’t very picky. They are probably on-par with the non-impacted CSUs.

If you plan to stay in Reno after you graduate, they are a good choice. If not, a UC or CSU degree will probably serve you better.

What are your stats and budget?

As somebody who grew up in the Tahoe area, I will say that the only redeeming quality of UNR is its proximity to the lake. It’s an OK school, with a decent science department, but the overall reputation is mediocre.

Since you are in California, I would suggest looking at the California schools. There is really no reason to attend UNR from out of state.

Thank you to everyone for all the wonderful remarks. I just realized that I wrote “a few hours a away for me” which is not
correct. Please ignore the " a" if possible. I want to know why the reputation of Reno is so bad. I have checked the CSUs and UCs. The CSU near me is a very good school, but I want to go away from home. I know that it would be extremely nice to live with my family and will cost less, but I want to explore the life of individuality. I am really curious about how it would be like to live alone and how to manage my money along with time. For my stats, I am an average student. My non-weighted GPA is 3.97 and weighted is 4.18. A lot of people have been telling me that I should look at UCs, but I honestly do not like to go to school with a lot of people. I prefer smaller class size. Perhaps UC Merced might work for me. Otherwise, I don’t think that any of the other UCs match my preference since most UCs have a huge population. The other CSUs that I have checked are kind of far a way from home. I know that I sound like a moron for wanting to say away from home and close at the same time. I just want to go to a college that is like 4 hours away from home so my parents can visit me when I’m sick.LOL. Again, I want to give a big “thank you” to all the information that everyone shared including the WUE information. Why is Reno a bad school?I mean, how does their education system suck? Thank you so much!!

AAAAAAAAAAAAARGH ONLY ON CC does a student with a 3.97 UW/4.18W says something like “I am an average student”!!!
Where do you go go HS,Cuppertino?

If you want a smaller school appropriate to your level, apply to a mix from: Occidental, any 2 of the Claremonts, LMU-LA, Chapman, URedlands’ Johnson program, UCSB’s College of Creative Studies, Reed, Lewis&Clark, Whitman, Willamette, Colorado College, UDenver, ASU Barrett (ASU s huge, but Barrett is smaller and has its own campus so it doesn’t feel as big)…
I bet at least 4 or 5 of these colleges are not too far yet away from home. Investigate.
Also, you can pick a strong CSU such as Cal Poly SLO or SDSU and live on campus, you don’t have to stay at home if you attend a CSU. Sonoma and CSU Chico (you’d get honors at both) are very residential.

UNR is bad because Nevada doesn’t invest in secondary education, nor in its universities. Its economy pretty much rests on tourism (Lake Tahoe and Las Vegas) so that’s the only well-funded program. It’s a bit philistine in that respect. Class sizes are big, students are not prepared for college, there isn’t much cutting edge research or much of any kind going on compared to most flagships… The NV students who can go to California or other states. CA students who get rejected by CSUs end up at UNR (and, as a poster upthread mentioned, can be very happy there.)

If you were going into the Hospitality business, then the UN schools are likely fine, even very good, considering that both LV and R are home to many hotels/casinos, etc. But, the schools are widely known as being very poor in other areas.

I agree that part or most of the problem is that too many of their state’s students do not come to college prepared.

What are your test scores?

How much will your family pay?

Getting the WUE discount is meaningless if your parents won’t pay. WUE is often only a good deal for “full payers”.

Merced sounds like a great idea. Also, I think there are a couple of CSUs that aren’t huge…aren’t there?

Are you a transfer student??? When did you graduate from HS?

I come from a poor family

Ok…so the UN schools are definitely out. Your family can’t pay for them.

If you are a transfer student, then that will change things. You probably will need to finish an AA at a CC and then TAG to a CSU or UC.

If you’re still in HS, then what are your test scores?

Why does Nevada publics have so bad rep?

Well, their flagship is at the level (for selectivity, applicants’ preparation, test scores, etc) of a lower-level CSU… and not sure it’s even at that level for funding and resources.

I see.

Yet there are people who STILL make fun of BAMA!

Well, those don’t even know there are universities in Nevada… or in their minds, Bama is legitimate enough to be made fun of, unlike the Nevada universities ( and a bunch of others, I’m sure - without internationals, no one would know about Minot State or Chadron State, even to make fun of.)

In any case, if the SAT/ACT score in on par with the GPA and since he’s lower income, this kid is better off with a “meet need college” or a UC (since these give better FA - if he prioritizes Merced, he may well end up with a nicer financial aid package than average.)

The UN’s aren’t even close to being affordable for this student, even with WUE. A Pell Grant and a student loan won’t cover his WUE costs. And WUE schools don’t give both merit and WUE…one or the other is what you get.

UC Merced is the best choice if he wants need met and a small school.

I don’t think Reno is a “bad” school. I’ve worked with a few people who had engineering or CS degrees from there, and they were all perfectly competent. They did like to party, though.

I’d consider it an average school, on a par with schools that have an “Eastern”, “Western”, “Southern” or “Northern” in their names.

I do like the UC Merced suggestion.

I have to be honest with you all that I scored exceedingly low on my SAT. I just took my ACT and still waiting for the scores to come out. For my SAT,I have 1280/2400.I just figured out with my counselor that the main reason why I scored so low was because I answered everything, including those questions that I don’t know. I plan to retake it. But my counselor said that there are some Asian students like me with low SAT scores and got into UC Davis and UC Irvine because they had two great personal statements. Also, for the SAT, I did horrible on the writing part because I disliked the topic. In additional to that, I guess it has to do with the lack of preparation in my school. We were never prepared on our SAT, but rather on our AP tests. I come from a low income family so I am sure that I’ll get FAFSA and will be applying for some scholarships. Yea, UC Merced might work for me.

Oh, I live in Chico.
