Does anyone know anything, good or bad, about this school in Maine? I can't find much about it beyond standard stuff.

It is well-respected regionally/locally in the health field. Many programs in that area.

momrules, what information are you looking for?

The school has 2 campuses, one in Biddeford and one in Portland, some 20 miles away.

The Biddeford campus is on a river inlet to the sea. You can walk to the ocean; in fact the university owns a beach. This might be an attraction to certain students, but a small, isolated dead campus in the long cold Maine winter might turn off anyone with urban desires. You need a car to do virtually anything off campus. UNE gives a bicycle to any student who opts not to bring a car, but even the (ugly) town of Biddeford is something like 7 miles away. Most of the region is nice (Saco to Portland and Kinnebunkport in the other direction). George Bush ‘41’ has donated to UNE and he took his boat to the campus when a building was dedicated to him and Barbara. It seems the typical student is from a small town in New England.

The Biddeford campus is strong in sciences and health fields, with extensive labs and a special marine biology building with tanks for seals, etc. Marine sciences is probably their most competitive program and more students apply to work in the Marine Science Center than can be accommodated.

[University of New England - Marine Sciences](http://www.une.edu/cas/marine/)

It’s become very easy to gain admission to UNE with its private school tuition and lack of college town feel. I’ve read that there is weeding out in the science majors and that the other majors are not strong.

Like probably any division 3 school, if you are on a sports team you have a built in social life and are busy enough to not be concerned how isolated the campus is.

The school is opening a large new dorm complex and also a large new sports facility. They offer some college courses in the summer for high school students, including in their Marine Biology program.

Thanks for the information…it was very helpful!
