University of New Hampshire

Hello, I'm a new poster wondering if anyone has information about University of New Hampshire's musical theater program. It's non-audition, so I'm investigating it as a safety school. Thanks.

I thought I heard they were adding an audition after this year.

^^I heard the same thing from a parent who attended an info session there this fall: will be auditioned starting next year. We visited this summer when there were no “official” theater admissions events or faculty around but had a wonderful impromptu tour from an administrator who told us a lot about the program. The school felt welcoming, and the program seems to have a variety of interesting options. And we loved the campus and area–it’s small town/rural, but there’s an Amtrak station on campus so you can get to Boston in an hour. My son has been accepted there (he’s straight acting, not MT, for what it’s worth), and I’ve heard good things about the program and its alumni, so it’s a real consideration for us. Hope that helps. Worth visiting of you can (probably not THIS snowy weekend, though!).

UNH was my daughter’s safety school last year. They have a very strong theatre/MT and dance program and the campus is beautiful. It’s “rural” but not rural as in the middle of nowhere and hard to get to. The Amtrak station as stated is literally right on campus (you don’t even need a shuttle you can just walk to your dorm). Hour outside of Boston. Nearby Portsmouth, NH has lots of restaurants live theatre etc.

I’m a bit biased because everyone from my family graduated from UNH. Including me. I’m touring it with my son in 2 weeks (but not for theatre) but if the tour goes anywhere near the theatre, I’ll ask about whether or not it is switching to an auditioned-based program and I’ll let you know.

Thanks. We will try to visit also.

If you are visiting UNH, you may also want to visit Plymouth State up the road. Smaller school, smaller program, but lots of individual attention. Wonderful vocal training, lots of performance opportunities. This is an auditioned BA program in the Department of Music, Theatre, and Dance.

This was good info. Yes I did check on-line and it is an audition program. Was going to put it down as a safety but no school with an audition is considered a safety. :)

I second the katmt’s recommendation of plymouth state. The facilities are nice and the professors extremely engaged. I absolutely loved it, but alas my d was not as swooned.
