UNM offers a full-ride scholarship and I was wondering if anyone is planning on/considering attending next year.

Hi Luna. Parent here. Yes, our student is considering UNM, has moved into the top 2-3 schools. Visit went very well, as we knew very little about UNM and Albuquerque.

Hi! I just visited last week, and met with the director of the honors college and a few other people. I’m questioning, though, why so few National merit finalists enroll each year. Any thoughts?

@Luna. Sounds like you had a visit similar to our student’s visit. We, too, wondered why so few NMFs enroll. This year, there has reportedly been record interest by NMFs and NMSFs; I can see why, as the scholarships are very generous and straightforward.

And the school’s attitude itself - they seem willing to bend over backwards to ensure our success, which was a real turning point in my opinion about the school. I’m just waiting to hear back from a few other things, but I think I’m going to be a Lobo next year!

Luna, you might have another Lobo NMF. Our student keeps asking questions and getting answers that indicate a good fit. When I hit 15 CC posts, I’ll send a PM. So far, our student hasn’t been interested in CC. Feel free to send me a PM. As a parent, I’m interested in hearing your thoughts on what UNM will do to help honors students succeed. If anyone else has any UNM thoughts, please share. Thanks.

My NMF D didn’t seriously consider UNM but mainly because we live in Albuquerque and she had her heart set on getting away from home. I think they have had fewer NMF/NMSF in the past because they didn’t offer a residential Honors College but I believe they are in the process of starting that. They have also built some new housing which helps (although I don’t know if that includes honors housing). I have heard good reports about the focus on undergraduate teaching/success at UNM.

@STEM and Luna - I’m not sure that the new housing is specifically for the Honors College students? The “scholars’ wing” in one of the existing res halls is reserved for honors students. STEM, glad that you’re hearing good reports on UG focus.
