University of Oklahoma Call Back Week-end

My daughter and Husband just returned from one of the 5 call-back week-ends that University of Oklahoma offers to students. They had an amazing time and were very very impressed! Because this school doesn’t get a lot of feedback on this forum, i thought i would let folks know about my family’s experience!

D was cb as a result of 2 different International Thespian events (one local and one in Nebraska), so she had met 2 of the faculty members who were present at the auditions, which was helpful as she said there were probably 8 or 10 in the room!

Both H and D said that everyone from the Students to those in the audition room were incredibly warm and engaging and made everyone feel very comfortable and relaxed.

The day began early, with registration and opening info session by the current Head of the program, who is retiring this year. He has been the interim chair and came out of retirement to do so…he is also the gentleman who started the program.

Each student had the opportunity to work with the accompanist before the scheduled audition, which is always so nice. So far she has only had this happen at Elon.

The singing and monologue audition were done at the same time in front of 8 or 10 faculty. D and H later found out that the faculty are very team-oriented and decisions for the 6 girls and 7 boys are made togthter.

The dance call was later that day, and had 2 options a “mover” call and a “trained dancer” call…D is actually fairly well-trained but opted for the “mover” call as she had heard from previous auditionees that the dance call is pretty challenging at either level. she was so glad she did. She said it was of the 2 most challenging dance calls of the audition season for her.

Students and parents were both taken on tours of the performing arts part of campus…and then there was an hour-long question and answer period.

Here are the answers to a couple of questions that we had heard varying info about:

“weigh-ins” Apparently there is a rumor that OU does weigh-ins (wow!), this is ABSOLUTELY not true.

Can MT’s audition for plays? Absolutely, they are encouraged to and they are cast.

Is there a showcase? They do not do a showcase in NYC, but they do bring casting folks (and big names) to campus for their showcase.

D and H also were able to see “A Funny Thing Happened…” and were very impressed. D said the great majority of the cast could sing, dance and act…and she felt the leads were all very talented in their abilities.

D also reported that the kids seemed very happy there. Many were also involved in Greek life, which is an option.

From D point of view, the price is definitely in the doable category and from D point of view the dorm food was great(which is saying a lot!)

All in all they were very excited about the possibility of this school being an option…

Great school…but weight is definitely an issue here.

Mountaintime, can you elaborate a bit on the above? Kiddo is heading there later this week for a callback audition, and we would love to know the good, the bad and the doesn’t-fit-any-other category about every school she’s considering.

Sent you a private message mommafrog

Mountaintime, could you possibly private message me as well on the weight issue. Thank you.

Sent one theatreheart…hopefully!

mybroadwaybaby…if you clear out your message box, I can send you a private mess.

mountaintime - Would you mind sending to me too a PM regarding weight? Thanks!

haha may i also get the PM bc I auditioned there and have been placed on priority hold and would love to know more bc they said that weight is OCU not OU in the info session…

I actually contacted OCU regarding the question as to whether or not kids in the MT program have “weigh-ins” . . . here is the message that I received back:

"Absolutely not XXXX! Dance majors are the only performing arts majors that have weigh-ins at OCU!

Can someone explain what “priority hold” means for OU?

It means they have picked their 12. As those accept or decline, you are next in line. You have a great shot at getting in. Be warned…if you get a call…you may be given only 48 hrs to decide

Actually, that is completely incorrect, mountaintime. I have been on priority hold since early November. I auditioned on their very first callback date in late October. Priority hold means that you are “still very much in consideration for one of the select openings” (direct quote from my letter). A few students (I’m thinking two or three) are said to have been accepted so far from their callback auditions and official letters for the rest of us (on priority hold) will be out during the weeks from March 23rd to April 1st. Hope that clears it up.

You are so right…I apologize for wrong info…I totally miss-remembered how and when the letters went out. Priority hold letters went out right after auditions. We were on hold in Feb…then received the call around April 1. Thanks for correcting me…that was a big mistake. Like you guys need any more stress!! But we were given 48 hrs to decide

@mountaintime: Are they “allowed” to ask for a reply in 48 hours? I thought that I’ve read threads on CC that prospective students have to declare by May 1st (or some particular date - I can’t remember for sure . . .)

Best wishes in your decision.

Didn’t think so…but they did. As you all plow through this journey, wherever you end up…you will see that lots of things don’t seem fair…be tough and speak up…and be the person YOU want to be. Toughen up now…because once you arrive at your chosen school…you are an adult…and it starts from day 1.

I’m actually a mom mountaintime, but I think I will have to toughen up too. hahaha!

see mtdog71 reply on Question about the May 1st National Response date…
it explains the date thing pretty well

This strand may be even better: http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/musical-theater-major/875533-school-not-abiding-may-1st-deadline.html?highlight=national+response

should we expect letters, acceptances, rejections to go out this week or next?
