Ok thanks. I hadn't really seen anything about different admissions standards so you scared me. LOL Everything I am reading makes me think she will really like UofO and Eugene so we will see!

As the person above stated, it really depends on what your major is. The thread starter mentioned Econ....That would be OSU. Although the sciences and engineering is better served by OSU Econ and Statistics is too. They have a great MPP program that has rigorous Economics classes as its base.

If you just want to get the basics out of the way here are some things to consider. Eugene is a bigger city and very liberal. Even though the size of U of O is smaller than OSU, there is way more money there. They are snobs when it comes to admissions and tight with scholarships. They prefer international students because that is where the money is. There is allot of history at UO and the number one contributor of money is Phil Night (NIKE). Sports, specifically football is HUGE there.

OSU is where the brainiacs or nerds thrive. Corvallis is a smaller town but you will see zap cars and more bikes. Corvallis is liberal too but there is a huge farming industry and agriculture is big. OSU has the only Veterinary school in Oregon. They really help those who struggle to get into college. You will be better served if you need scholarships at OSU than UO. HP, CH2MHill, Intel, Tektronics, all of those industries help support the school and offer internships. They only go to OSU for new hires and not only for tech industry. They look for business and econ majors as well as the sciences. OSU has a HUGE campus and has their own bus system to serve students. OSU is huge on sports as well but more centered on baseball where they have won the nationals several years in a row. They excel in football too. They have a navy college and a marines college.

When it comes to science OSU is the leader compared to all colleges. Alternative energy, tsunami technology, animal sciences, wave energy, and marine sciences are the state of the art at OSU and no other college is ahead in books, articles, or journals written by their faculty.

I hope I helped.

FYI about OOS admissions at the U of O: We visited in August and were told that a high school GPA of 3.25 with 16 semesters of "college prep" classes earned guaranteed admission. This was true for OOS as well as in-state. My son gave me a wide-eyed questioning look when the presenter mentioned this. I leaned over to my son and whispered "that's what you call a really good safety". :)

I don't know how OSU & UO compare for business, but OSU does have an interesting entrepreneurship program:

Austin Entrepreneurship Program - College of Business, Oregon State University

I always thought UO has the better business school in the state. Is that not correct?

They both have good academic reputations. Perhaps UO a but more, but the choice between the two, I think, should be made with a lot of regard to the atmosphere you want. They are very different in that respect.

UO does have the better business. UO has a top 10 graduate school for education, and I'm pretty sure Oregon state is also very highly ranked in engineering. Personally, being from oregon myself, UO has the better college town. So in terms of environment and atmosphere, ducks all the way

Where did you end up going?

If you had searched his posting history instead of bumping a 5 year old thread you would have seen that he ended up going to U Oregon.

Oh that is cool. Sorry, I am currently deliberating between those two schools and am also new to this website and I don’t know how to search his posting history. Thank you though!

We live nearby in WA and D14 has toured both U of O and OSU. Funny, we thought she’d really prefer U of O, but she absolutely fell in love with OSU! It’s currently in her top three and is a safety for her with a 3.6 UW GPA. She liked the small town feel where everyone around town was wearing orange and black (Go Beavs!). A very leafy campus with limited streets through the campus was appealing to her vs. O of U’s more big town feel (like U of Wash.). It’s really about personal preferences. There’s never a right or wrong decision–only YOUR decision.

We know D will be applying to OSU in the fall. Time will tell if it’s THE ONE. Her parents would be thrilled if she chose OSU because it’s a great school, 4.5 hours from home which is far enough away to only come home for holidays, but not too far for us to drive down for a weekend homecoming football game ;-).

What is the difference between Corvallis and Eugene? Just a general idea.

Corvallis has a population of 56,000–Eugene 156,000. Eugene is known as a very liberal city. Corvallis not as much. Eugene is a larger city with busier traffic, more to do, but both are football crazy. The Ducks are a top 5 football team, so it’s a big part of the culture.

Both are located just off the I-5 Freeway for easy commutes to Portland, Seattle, etc.

OSU is known for their environmental science strength. They also have programs U of O doesn’t have. UofO is slightly harder to get into and has a better ranking than OSU.

Both are similar sized, but the campuses are quite different. You can visit both in a day as they’re only an hour apart.
