University of Oregon Out-of-State Student

I am a California high school senior who just got admitted to University of Oregon. I love the school and the are, but the tuition is insanely high for out of state students. Are there any scholarships or other ways to get money so that I might be able to go to this school?

From Oregon?

Not likely. Did you run the net price calculator on the O website?

Likely your family would be expected to pay all or nearly all costs since your parents don’t pay taxes there.

Your stats aren’t high enough for much/any merit. O isn’t known for giving much in scholarships.

Don’t get your heart set on Oregon unless your parents will pay the high costs.

Assume no.

I go to University of Oregon. Most people I know are from California. Trust me, the people I know who are out-of-state have their tuition paid by their rich grandma and grandpa or they’re taking out 35,000+ in loans. If you really want to go here. Apply for outside scholarships. And University of Oregon has merit scholarships but they’re very small and very competitive.

@hopinginschool I was thinking the same thing, I just got accepted. Did you find any scholarships or information that would help? Thanks!

Based on GPA and SAT you can get up to $9,000/yr. merit scholarship which does soften the blow.

See: http://financialaid.uoregon.edu/scholarships_freshmen make sure you got to “Out-of-State Residents”

You should get $3,000/yr. the “Appex” award as you made 3.60 GPA or higher on a 4.00 scale; 1150 (CR+M). I think your a little shy of the $9,000/yr. under the “Summit” award which lists 3.80 GPA or higher on a 4.00 scale; 1190 (CR+M). The “Summit” is the highest out of state unless your an athlete or some sort of road scholar.

There is one additional scholarship for $6,500/yr. requires a separate application and essay set “Diversity Excellence” and is competitive, but that is now closed for incoming Fall 2016 students.

I got accepted earlier this month with a scholarship! It’s not much, $4,000 a year, but it’s at least a little to cover the cost. I’m not sure if I’m attending since I’m waiting on other schools! As ArtDad222 has said, you can get a scholarship if your academics are high enough. It should be 4,000 a year for the Appex Scholarship instead of 3,000 since you are OOS.

Most outside scholarships you find on your own get subtracted from your work/study contribution and then any left over from the college’s portion and not your family’s expected portion. See their website to double check how outside merit aid is handled.
