I'm looking for discussion about the University of Oregon. I know it is about it rankings, etc., but I like to hear about experiences from people who actually attended or are attending right now I looked in the "colleges" forum but not much there.

My D has been accepted to UO and UCSC, UCSB, and UCSD. But her interest in UO has to do with the fact that they offer Finnish language courses and an exchange program at the University of Tampere in Finland (UO is one of 11 universities in North America to offer Finnish language as a major/minor). My D is a dual US/Finnish citizen and is very interested in learning the language and eventually living/working there for some period in her life. I can imagine her cobbling together a course of study that includes History, International Studies and Finnish language and culture.

Some people I talk with think she should go to one of the UC's because they are higher ranked institutions. and so more prestigious -- and that she won't be as challeged at UO. I don't get that feeling when I browse the UO web site.

We're going to visit soon but I'd really like to hear about other people's experiences at UO as a way to help my D think about her choice (and it will ultimately be her choice).

My daughter applied to and was accepted at U of O.
As she visited as part of her junior class, I didn't get a chance to visit, but I have heard great things about the school and the town.
( Very liberal and wet)
It is rather expensive for a public school, although they often have decent merit aid for out of staters
they also were very cordial when she sent her regrets , leaving us with a very good impression.
I agree that it seems to be a strong school and sometimes I think my D should have attended a school that size- but since she has now moved to Oregon, perhaps she will attend grad school there.

I think you should be sure and visit if you can-

Actually,

UO is very much like the UC's. It is very liberal, and has an active student body. Most are outdoorsy, as the weather is always nice. Eugene is a great college town, more so than must of the UC system campuses. Ethos is more like UC-Santa Cruz and UC-Santa Barbara. Less like UC-San Duego. It is, of course, more temperate here, and the skiing is good.

As for academics, it's about as challenging as the UC's so I would not worry too much. I'd say if your daughter likes it, then she should go to school at UO.

Since I live in Washington, I regret not applying to UO and taking advantage of the WUE...I've heard lots of good things about that school. I don't think I'd have actually ended up attending there anyway--I wanted to get farther away from home--but it would have been a good option. I can't really say anything bad about UO, except personal-preference things, like the rainy weather and the location and the liberal political atmosphere and the (IMHO) ugly green and yellow colors.

I would definitely reccommend it right up there with the UC's.

Thank you for you replies -- your comments mesh with my impressions of the UO. I've actually visitied the campus but my D hasn't so while I can imagine her there -- she can't. We'll be visiting in the next two weeks.
