[] Summer Activities: art, internships, research, work, volunteering, and relaxing.
[] Essays: my commonapp was a narrative rooted in a studio experience in which i reflected on self-hate and beauty defined in the asian community, and how living against those notions influences and drives me in my artistry and life. why penn was horribly nostalgic, long, and corny, but i liked my autobiography snippet which also happened to be way too long.
[] Teacher Recommendation: presumably excellent, but i doubt they were anything jaw-dropping.
[] Counselor Rec: i’m sure this was fabulous: specific, long, lively, and stuffed with anecdotes. we get along great!

[] Income Bracket: can afford college…
[] Hooks (URM, first generation college, etc.): none. Though my parents never completed anything past high school, my older sister did go to college.

[/ul]Reflection[ul]
[] Strengths: Artistic, well rounded in academics
[] Weaknesses: Haven’t been motivated in high school (found the course work a bit easy, so I never actually spent more than an hour at home each day on schoolwork… hence the non 4.0)
[] Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected: Probably the art portfolio
[] Where else were you accepted/waitlisted/rejected: Rejected from Yale (as expected), Wait listed at Cornell Arch, accepted at Pratt, Parsons, Rice, Syracuse, Northeastern (yes, I applied because my counselor assumed I wouldn’t get into any of my colleges. I regret listening to her.)
[/ul]General Comments:
I applied to UPenn expecting not to get in. Only one other girl got into UPenn at my HS and I think she applied ED.
Already paid the deposit and all, but I’m a bit unsure of what to do because I want to go into M Arch. There are so many requirements and requires around 6-7 years as opposed to the 5 year B Arch and M Arch that some other colleges offer.

As for unrelated ranting… When I told my HS counselor I was going to apply to UPenn, Yale, Cornell, Rice she said “You know, those schools are too hard to get into. You don’t really have a chance, unless I write a really good recommendation for you! Then maybe you’ll get in.” Does she not realize that counselor recommendations are mostly to check if you have any mental issues? That and she forced Northeastern as a safety for me (other classmates put NE as a safety with a 3.2-3.4 GPA). So, for future HS seniors, don’t take what your counselor says TOO seriously (unless they actually know what they’re doing :P).

You know what the true problem is…The Ivy League is in the posistion to do whatever they want. They mostly accept people based on race, money, threat(joking) and etc. You can be one of the most academically proficient student around and still get no easily get rejected as any other two cent moron who applies on a limb. Ask yourself one question: when you fill out these application do you present yourself or some ingenious, overachieving robot?
