<p>Yes, Wharton uses the waitlist. Spaces are determined by overall class size, but also by needs relating to specific schools, programs, and majors, as well as under-represented communities and/or geographical regions. I don’t have the stats for slots by school, but I bet someone does. </p>
<p>Which is why highly selective schools like Penn and its peers have to start with relatively large waiting lists compared to the number of spaces they ultimately will need to fill from those lists. Before the May 1st reply date and the subsequent “summer melt” of the enrolled class, there’s just no way to know which types of applicants they’ll need to enroll from their waiting lists. </p>
