University of Pennsylvania; Huntsman Program

Hi, I am an international student from Toronto, Canada and I will be applying to Wharton/Huntsman (University of Pennslyvania) Early Decision. I know it's a bit late but I would just like to know if I would even stand a chance?

Academics:
Grade 11 GPA - 92%
I'm an IB student and my school doesn't rank but I would say I am definitely in the top 5%. (My school holds an recognition assembly and I received awards for having the highest marks in Math, English, French, and Law.)
SAT - 2390 (800 Critical Reading, 800 Writing, 790 Math)
SAT II - just took them in October, don't have the results yet
IB - French SL 7/7; Geography SL 6/7

ECs:
The most major accomplishment I have in this area is that I started a theatre group for immigrant youths at a community centre (6-year old program) and we have performed plays at various functions and for fundraising purposes. I will focus on this as my extracurricular.
Minor ECs:
Leader of peer tutoring at my school, class representative on the Student Leadership Council, President of Math Club, member of Science Olympics, debate...etc.
I have volunteered at summer camps and senior citizen homes for the past 4 summers, garnering about 400 hours in volunteering.
The reason I became interested in business is because some of my friends asked (read: forced) me to act as a salesperson for their Junior Achievement club (basically you try to start a company). At first I was reluctant, but in the end I actually managed to ean close to $400. Unfortunately nothing ever really came out of it awards-wise.
Contests - I am an AIME qualifier, and have won awards in several local Math Contests (Fermat, Hypatia, etc)

Work Experience:
I worked in outreach at the community centre where I started the group. Essentially the goal of this position is to get information out to the public about the programs the centre offers (making posters, information nights, some fundraising, etc)

Essays and Recommendations:
Excellent recommendations; I have not finished my essays yet but I think that they'll be decent.

Wow, I was reading your thread, and I went like, holy crap your stats are ridiculously similar to mine. I’m from Canada as well, with the same SAT score and waiting for the SAT2s coming.

The only thing I would say is that you’re a good candidate for the top schools in general, but I’m not sure about the Huntsman aspect. You seem to be a math kid, if you get what I’m saying. Anything you do thats more business-y and international?

If you’re not in, there’s a real problem with how admissions works. To answer the above post, I think OP has demonstrated great “business” feel/leadership by starting the theatre company. What is your target language? Best of luck to you, and I sincerely hope and believe you’ll be happy on the 15th of December.

@ sauternety36 Yes, you’ve voiced my worries exactly…As I mentioned, my interest in business/economics started rather late, and so I don’t really have much purely business ECs (ie. have not started own profit-making company, have not participated in any business-related contests, etc…). As for the international part, the only thing that I can say is that I have lived in three countries (the US will be my forth). ;)I couldn’'t afford to go to any language-exchange programs. Last year, I actually tried to ask for permission (with a bunch of other kids) to fundraise for plane tickets, expenses, etc to go to Africa to start a non-profit, but my school turned it down because they didn’t want the paperwork. ;(
Are you applying to Huntsman too? If so, good luck to the both of us! If all goes well we’ll see each other next fall. (lol)

@ davidsusername Thank you for your positive response! My target language is French (not my native language).

No problem! I’m applying for Huntsman but after some thought, I really think I’m better for Wharton. But I already wrote my Huntsman essay so I dont want to waste it since I spent quite a bit of time on it. And since admission says Huntsman rejects go straight to the undergrad school adcom without chances getting hurt, so I figure why not go for Huntsman as well. I dont know… does that work?

Well, if you think that you’re better for Wharton then maybe you should apply directly there? For example, if you realize that you don’t really like international studies, and you DO get into the Huntsman program, you would actually have to go (and be stuck with 4 years of courses you don’t want to take). But if you’re more “well I’m not sure if I want to go to Huntsman or Wharton”, maybe try it? Just make sure you’re sure you want to dual-major in business & international studies because you are signing up for 4 years of grueling work.

I LIKE Huntsman but I just dont think I have a very big chance of getting in considering my target language is my home language, which means I’m already quite fluent in it. It’ll be great to go to either though. I just hope that being rejected from Huntsman wont kill my chances for Wharton.

If that’s so, then try it!
They do say that your chances at Wharton are unaffected by your decision in Huntsman, and actually many people who apply to the program ARE accepted to Wharton.
Even if your target language is your native language, you may still get in. Who knows how admissions work?

…Any other suggestions?

I giggled at how xoxoxoxo tried to reduce 1 applicant from Canada with a deceptively kind message ;)

anyways, good luck to you all. from bc, vancouver. fouder of the first high school international mun in Canada, 13 muns, assistant chair at harvard worldmun 2012, seattle international piano comp semi-finalist, winner of korean cultural heritage international piano comp ($500 scholarships from general consulate of republic of korea)
